    66 427/425HP Valve Covers/ Whats Correct?

On 66 BB Valve Covers. Is the oil filler cover always Black? Or Silver as well? In Nolands Book Show's it both ways. With Silver Cover also having the Tonawanda decal to its right. Is that decal correct? Or for (mid yrs) limited to 67 BB valve covers only? Thx

    Jay,
BB oil caps were typically Black and have taken on a greenish hue with age.
Factory application of the Tonawanda stickers began in '67.

      Mike-----

I don't think the greenish hue is something they acquired with age. Contrary to what the specs call for, I believe that many of these caps were not painted black but were electroplated with something called "black zinc". Many small block, non chrome oil tube filler caps were, too. I think that "black zinc" has this variable greenish hue from the get-go.

In 65 the oil cap was painted black and starting some time in the end of the 65 run to the begining of the 66 run they were plated Black (with the green hue).

I agree with Rich. The greenish hue came from the plating, not aging.

Black Zinc seems to be a relatively new item. Check the old GM prints, black phos was very common. Black oxide not that common and a relatively high temp process. Cad, zinc, zinc dichromate and phos & oil were the top finishes for GM fasteners.

On these caps - unsure - Stant does not have records back that far, but where their factory is/was is one of the oldest and largest black oxide platers... I'm calling them next week.
