    repop 69 door glass

How does the repop glass do when judged and are some vendors better than other?

I've been looking off and on for some nice clean Dec 68 or Jan 69 door glass for my coupe for a while and to be honest am getting tired of it.

One option is to try and polish my original glass but it's scratched quite badly and I've read that that will have limited results anyways. The other option is to go the repop route which I guess is okay as long as it's a good repop. The glass is tinted and I've read that tinted glass these days all have a "oily" sheen to them at certain angles which would be a dead give-a-way that it's not original.

    Any ideas?

    Re: repop 69 door glass

    Greg,

I have the same issue with my early build 69 (build date 11/18/68). I like you have been looking for some time and haven't found an acceptable used/NOS replacement. I have had the car judged several time and only loose a point or two. You may loose that many points if you use a repop.

So it comes down to what trips your trigger, how much time and money you're willing to spend for the additional points if you have the car judged. My preference is to keep parts original if at all possible and take the hit on condition.

    Regards

    George

      Greg / George

Same problem with badly scratched / pitted glass. My search led me to "OEM Glass". I'm not ready to replace the glass yet, but unless I find someone better, will probably go with them. http://www.oemglass.net/

      Regards,

      Pete

Same problem, left door glass scratched due to bad felt on guides. I searched for correct dated used and more scratches, so I replaced with correct dated repo glass and may take a judging hit, but I am very pleased the scratches are finally gone. Steve

Thanks guys. I guess we're all in the same boat on this one.

I had just bought a "nice" set but upon opening the box I see that one side is as bad as my originals and the other is far worse with a BIG gouge that is not even close to being repairable so thanks to a fellow NCRS member I'm back at square one and out some money.

Oh well, I think at this point I might be better off just trying to polish up my originals. The points will probably be the same, they WILL be the originals and I won't waste anymore money on bad deals. It's just that with a nicely done car, it's nice to have clean glass with NO scratches. I guess I can't have it both ways....

There was a thread on here a couple of months ago about a method to polish glass, including the deep gouges that are so bothersome. The kit to do it is expensive -- more than 1K -- but the results are spectacular. There were extensive before and after photos of the glass on a 1963 and a link to the seller of the kit. It might be worth your while to look for that thread.

I think this is the thread Terry is thinking of .

I'm not sure I did it correctly. Chip

The problem I see with the repop glass is the font / weight of the Logo & Date code. It's as if the etch was set to BOLD. Don't really have a recommendation for you, but it's a point deduction if Lou and I are judging it.

What's the point deduction for the font issue with repro glass? Is a deduct taken for each piece? eg - what would be the total deduction for the 'vent glass & trim' and 'side glass & trim' sections?

The 68 to 72 repros I have seen the glass is much thinner than the oem.
