    Shock absorbers 1972 - replacements

Has anybody installed or know about AC/Delco's 530-315 front and 530-4 rear shocks?

I am interested in how closely they compare to the original shocks that were on the car - color - stamping - general configuration, etc.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Thanks

There's probably more in the archives on this subject than any other subject.

The above-referenced shocks will work fine. However, they are the wrong color (black) and will need to be re-painted the correct shock gray.

Other than labels which have to be removed to paint them and which would not be correct anyway, there is nothing on these shocks to identify them as Delco. There are no Delco or GM stampings and there is no GM or Delco part number.

As far as GENERAL configuration goes, they are similar to the originals (but, just about any shock is going to be as similar). However, no one that is familiar with original shocks is going to mistake them for original.

There is a "saving grace" at least as far as the front shocks are concerned since they can't be seen very well installed on the car.

All-in-all, though, the Delco shocks will perform well and are a good value. Plus, I don't think there's any shock on the market that's much closer to the originals in configuration, although some KYB's I've seen might be.

Thanks a lot Joe, your detailed narrative is great and very helpful.

Other than the broadcast code labels; are there any other labels/decals on the original shocks I should be aware of?

Original shocks had only the broadcast ID labels on them. The 'giveaways' are (1) the EXACT shape of the shock body, (2) the color of the outside surface, (3) the replacement shock's LACK of the factory original indentifying emboss sequence and assy's date coding.
