    1967 300hp camshaft

Is the 3732798 camshaft blank used to grind the 1967 3896929 finished camshaft?

Thanks in advance for the help, Tim

No, the 3896929 camshaft was manufactured from casting number 3896930. The 3732798 casting was used for the 3733431 camshaft which was a predecessor to the 3896929.

        Thanks Harry and Joe,

I have a chance to buy one but the cylinder is opened and 3732798 is cast into the blank with a orange stripe. Cylinder shows 3896929 camshaft part #..

It's possible that the cams were switched in the tube at some point. However, I doubt it. I don't see any reason why a GM #3896929 camshaft could not have been ground using a 3732798 core. I don't think it was common for this to happen and I don't even have any thing to verify it was done. But, I could see it happening.

Check the ends of the cam for a stamped-in number.

You can buy a Sealed Power CS274 for a little over fifty bucks, which is built to the ...930 camshaft blueprint. Yes, 3896930 is the finished camshaft, not the "core"; 3896929 and CS274 are camshaft and indexing pin assemblies.

I dont' recommend the earlier ...798/...431 camshaft/cam pin assembly even if you could find one. It was OE on '57-'66 base engines and optional engines that used the base engine camshaft, but it has very harsh dynamics compared to the new '67 design, which is also shown as the replacement for the above referenced '57-'66 engines in the Corvette P&A catalog.

GM learned a lot about valvetrain dynamics by the mid-sixties and it shows in the new '67 design.

Those tubes are sturdy and a good place to put the used cam tha one removed if you're not quite sure you should through it away, which could be the case here.

A new OE camshaft will have a mottled gray finished on everthing but the bearing journals due to the Parkerized treatment. (It's polished off the journals.) A used cam will be shinny over the top of the lobe because the Parkerizing wears off.
