66 BB fuel pump part number and picture?

What is the correct original part number for a 1966 L72 big block application?

If you have a picture will you please post one?

    Thanks in advance.

It was an AC 40366. The original GM SERVICE part number was 6416245 but that number appears nowhere on the pump

Early 1966 40366 fuel pumps (to Jan. 1966) have a round lower fitting while late 1966 pumps use a square lower fitting. Reproductions are available from Zip Corvette. Pictures of both pumps are on their web site.

Thanks. Do the Zip repro's look right? How about the fitting, what is it supposed to look like?

Any idea what the 'SH' means that is in front of the 40366?

Any others have lettering in addition to the numbers on their fuel pumps?

Lots of C3s have letters in front and/or behind the ORIGINAL and SERVICE REPLACEMENT fuel pump numbers. We also would be interested in the meaning of them. On the other hand, I have yet to meet anyone who has found the time and method to judge either the numbers or letters on the show field.

                  Thanks Harry,

Is this an early or late pump? I am still trying to differentiate between the round and square fitting. The pictures on Zip's website look the same to me so I am not sure what that means.

                  Thanks,

                  Larrry

First of all, I believe the stamping looks more like "CH40366" instead of "SH40366" but I may be wrong.

I have studied and collected AC fuel pumps for the last 25 years and I believe the letters indicated a date code of some sort. In the very early 1980's I removed an AC 4657 fuel pump off a 1966 Chevrolet 327 engine assembled in May 1966. The fuel pump had a "66" casting with 3 radial line segments (indicating March 1966) on it as well as stamped "4657EF" ("E" = May? , "F" = 1966?). I've also had many other used and NOS AC 4657 fuel pumps (GM part # 5621665) as well as a NOS 6842 Chevrolet 409 fuel pumps (GM part # 5621887) over the years. Here are a few examples:

                      "65" casting with 10 radial line segments (Oct. 1965) and stamped "4657KE" ("K" =Oct.?, "E" = 1965?)

"66" casting with 5 radial segments (May 1966) and stamped "4657GF"
                      ("G" = July?, "E" = 1966?)

"64" casting with 2 line segments (Feb. 1964) and stamped "4657"

                      "65" casting, stamped "6842KE" ("K" = Oct.?, "E" = 1965?)

                      NOS "DI 40658" non-rebuildable AC pump used on 1968-1969 Corvettes (GM #6417337) where the "D" = April?, the "I" = 1969?

Years ago I talked with someone from Goat Hill Classics at the Carlisle, PA, swap meet about AC fuel pump dating and he did not believe that AC fuel pumps have date codes BUT he was in the business of selling vintage rebuilt AC fuel pumps so date coding could possibly limit the sale of his vintage AC pumps.

                        Larry:

The original 1966 BB 427 Pump was GM # 6416245.

The original pumps in "67", "68", and "69" were GM # 6416741 and the AC servce pump was AC 40482.

My suggesion would be to call the Airtex Tech Assistance line for additional help it's free of charge. 1-800-424-7839.

                          GM part # 6416245 = AC part # 40366

                            Hello David:

I was unable to find AC 40366 in an AC Catalog, Borg Warner Catalog, Carter Catalog, or Airtex Catalog. That pump number had to be superceded by anothen pump number many years ago and is no longer listed in any current catalogs.

Time keeps moving on, the last mechanical fuel pump was installed on a domestic vehicle in 1986. That's 24 years ago.

Allow me to throw a bunch of pics of 40366's that I've collected over the "good" years [meaning you don't see much of this stuff anymore]

I know absolutely NOTHING about these pumps or '366's in general. There's fifth pic of this series which I'll ad to next posting (limit of 4 jpegs/post). You'll have to click on the "attached image" jpeg in order to see it (don;t know why it doesn't show as thumbnail).
