    Tumbling

Who is the best and quickest for tumbling aluminum intakes and valve covers to look new?

Jerry MacNeish (z28camaro.com) offers a reskinning service. I've used it a few times with very good results.

      David,
Since you have used Jerry Mcnish a couple of times and I plan to for an intake and exhaust manifolds I was just curious about the finished surface on valve covers. I used Don (I think) Dorfman from the old ASL company in Nevada and my parts came back looking brand new, intake was beautiful and valve covers as well. My only problem was the casting flaw - crack in the mold for late 66 valve covers was almost nonexistence after his process.
Since what I will be sending Jerry is a rough cast part and not a smooth finished part I am not concerned, but have you had any loss of detail on any parts using his service?
      Pete

Pete, I have sent Jerry several rough cast parts that came out as close to perfection as I have ever seen. Same results with Fred Hudson.

Obviously, there is some risk, but I know of no other way to achieve the re-skinning process.

        Good luck,

          Peter,

I sent him two intakes and an alternator. All came back with zero loss of detail. Any questions you have such as the casting flaw in valve covers that must remain there, he will answer for you. The alumium parts look great when finished.

            Re: Tumbling

Refinishing of aluminum castings does not remove the casting flaw which is the so called seam going thru the letter "O" in the March 66 plus or minus Corvette valve covers.
If it does remove the flaw then the process being used to refinish is incorrect.

No "reskinning" involved. When I refinish the FI castings for my restorations there is ZERO reskinning. I don't know what some of the companies are saying in their ads and I mean no disrespect to anyone but if they are advertising reskinning valve covers then that's false advertising.
I am not looking for any more refinishing work as buried now and getting old. Refinishing castings is slave labor. I would rather play with my 63 and work on customers FI's. Let Jerry and others do it.
Just trying to educate on the proper terminology.
            Refinishing. Not reskinning.

John, you are technically 100% correct on the proper term. Re-skinning is incorrect. It has however, sort of taken a life of it's own, and in my view, more easily understood by the masses.

Kind of like a "Zerox", Most will understand a Zerox is just a photocopy.

Please excuse this ole parts junkie for my use of the term "re-skinning"
