    76 Corvette with 374 miles

    Hi:
I ran across this auction on ebay (item #250565832827) for a 76 Corvette advertised with 374 original miles. I am in no way associated with this item, do not know if it is as advertised, just thought it was interesting for others here to view online. The ebay link is http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

That car sold for $38,500, including buyer's premium, at Barrett Jackson, Scottsdale in 2008.

The ebay ad stated that it was bought at B-J, and is now a donation from an estate. Thanks for the B-J tie in/confirmation!

Is the trim plate normally painted over on a '76?

Good eye Chris. The plate should be unpainted from St. Louis.

Could this have been Bob McDorman's car at one time ? Seems to me he had a yellow 76 with the same color interior and nearly no miles ???

Wasn't it pretty typical for cars of this era to have paint on the tag ??

At some point in the mid to later 1970s the final coat of paint was applied to the car after the trim tag. I am not sure when that began to happen, but I would bet someone on here knows.

Without checking numbers or dates, the car looks pretty correct.

                      I purchased a new '76 in December of 1975.

One thing I see here that I never saw in '76(and everyone knows once you buy a certain car you then see the same car everywhere on the road so you are looking at them all the time) are the Goodyear Steelgard tires? The last year I have seen or saw back then with the GYs were 1974. Pretty much Firestone Radial 500s on the Corvettes by 1976?

                      Looks like a great car!

Re: 76 Corvette with 374 miles

Goodyear Steelguards were used thur the 73-76 model year. White letter, white stripe and blackwall. All 77 Corvette were either blackwall Steelguards or optional white letter Steelguard. Goodyear went to (small white letter for 78 only) Goodyear Polysteels for 1978. The optional 255 Goodyear GT Radial in 1978-1982. The Goodyear Polysteels were used 79-82 with a larger style white letter.
The Firestone 500's were used 1973-1977 on Corvettes. Firestone knew the tires were bad, and with the recall GM wasn't using Firestones as much, but some Corvettes still came with them. The owner at Palmyra Motors thought I was telling my customers (they knew) about how bad the Firestones 500's were. Most of my customers alway wanted Goodyears so if the Corvette they wanted had Firestone 500's and they wanted them switched, we switched them. But remember there was a tire stirke in the USA in the Spring of 1976 that lasted till the end of August 1976. Firestone 500 and Goodyear Steelguards tires were used thur the 77 model year. I remember some early 1977 Corvettes coming in at the end of Aug 76 with just a steel wheel as a spare. Customers had to wait to get spare at dealer, as tires came in after the strike ended. Firestone made a replacement tire called the Firestone 721 to replace the Firestone 500's. When the recall became official, you could turn in your old 500's and get the new 721's(no matter how many miles on tire) no charge. No Firestone 721's ever came from the St Louis or Bowling Green factory on a new Corvette.

Share with us what you saw on the original spare tire.

                            It would interesting to know?

Can you check the date code on the tire and even the wheel may shed some light on this possible mystery of GY vs Firestone use in mid 70s Corvettes.

this should shed some light on the tire subject, but keep in mind there was NO docs to actually prove that this spare was the one that came with the car. considering ALL other aspects of the cars originality i would say it's a pretty good bet it was. the spare tire (white lettered goodyear steelgard) is dated 127. (12th week of 1977-end of march) and the ralley wheel is dated 2-10 (february 10th.) the dates fall in perfect sequence with the cars build date of march 28th. hope this helps the subject in hand.
