69 turn signal & horn trouble shoot help

    Hi everyone,

My 1969 non tilt wheel does not have turn signals or horn working at present. Brake and headlights work. What's the best way to trouble shoot before tearing into the steering column?

Re: 69 turn signal & horn trouble shoot help

Let's start here. Did they suddenly stop working?

    1. Check the fuse.
    2. Do the indicators light but don't blink? Or do they not come on at all?
    3. Is the flasher in place? It's clipped to the back side of the right lower dash pad.
    3. Do the emergency flashers work? It's on a seperate circuit and uses a flasher located on the fuse block.
    4. When you push the horn button does the horn relay click? The relay is located on the left inner fenderwell, just in front of the vacumm can.

Here are a couple trouble shooting papers that might help.

They are all in Microsoft Word format. I am slowly getting around to converting them to pdf.

      Hope that they help,
      Jim

          Hi Michael and Jim,

Here's where I am at present.
          1. Check the fuse. All fuses have been replaced
2.Do the indicators light but don't blink? Yes.
          3. Is the flasher in place? Yes
          4. Do the emergency flashers work? Yes
          5. I will need to have someone listen or push the horn button to see if the relay clicks. I don't here it right now. Thanks for helping me find the actual horn! progress has been made!

In the daylight I'll check the chasis and column connector / cluster, I believe I found it hanging around the clutch pedal....

You guys have been a great help so far. Does the above make sense?

          David

If the dash indicators are lighting but not flashing the harmonica connector on the lower column must be correctly connected, and the power from the fuse is there.

Here is a couple more things to check.

First, swap the emergency flasher from the fuse block (that you know is working) with the signal flasher located behind the lower right dash. If that works you know the flasher is bad.

Typicaly a single contact 1156 bulb.
The correct one is an 1157 for the rear and 1157A for the front. Both are dual filament bulbs.

              Michael,

I want to thank you so much for your help with my turn signal issue! It was a bad flasher. Once I switched them around as you suggested the turn signals worked! Now off to tackle the horn.

It's people like you that make the NCRS so fun and valuable.

              Thanks again!
