At the risk of sounding stupid, what are the two things sticking through the jack compartment? Or is that the battery compartment?

Vent tubes for the battery.

Those are the rubber tubes that are the vents for the battery. Note the angle they are cut at.

The finger belongs to Gene Mano -- he was checking for the plate that is welded inside the cross member at the factory designated tie-down location(s). My 1970, and we believe earlier C2s and C3s, have that reinforcement. This 1972 does not. I am confident Gene will continue his research using his edumicated digit so that we can determine if and when this reinforcement was deleted.

I got to get home to get the VIN and build date. We are still pedaling north. Today is the Museum and then home, but there are a few tasks backed up due to the week-long absence. I am even taking care of some of hem as we travel. Someone else may have the serial number of THAT car in the mean time; there was a lot of interest in it.

Sorry, should have been more detailed in my question. Not a part and I am not sure what I am looking at but is that a crack or a separated weld that my arrow points to?
