    69 Side Exhaust Covers

Is it a good idea to apply adhesiive between new covers and the fiberglass/heat shield structure? If so, how much and what sort of adhesive is recommended.

    Re: 69 Side Exhaust Covers

    Hi Michael,
The 69 covers I bought in 71 had some material between the outer moldings and the fiberglass inner liner.
There were 'globs' (5-6; 1 for the rear molding, 2 for the front, and 2-3 for the center section) of what looked like the 'bond' that was used in assembling the body panels. It stuck to the fiberglass and easily pulled away from the covers when I separated them. I'd say each 'glob' was about a tablespoon of material. ( Can't you just see the word 'tablespoon' used as a quantity in the AIM!!!)
    Regards,
    Alan

      Alan,
I presume you purchased the complete set up in 1971 that was used on a 1969 correct? So did you replace the chrome covers with new chrome covers? If so, when you did, did you use glue to hold the new chrome covers onto the fiberglass/metal heat shield assembly? I replaced my orginal covers on my 1969 about 12 years ago and when I did I used a fairly large amount of "Liquid Nails" to hold the new chrome covers onto the fiberglass portion. I was told that if I didn't use glue that the covers might rattle after a while. This seemed reasonable because the screws holding the covers to the fiberglass portion where so short with only about three threads into the cover. Yesterday, when I attempted to remove the now blistered chrome center cover I had to litterly cut the cover off a small section at a time until I was able to pry the remaining portions of the cover off the fiberglass. I don't remember any adhesive on my original covers and the 1969 AIM doesn't show adhesive becasue apparently the covers came to the assembly plant as an assembly with the chrome pieces already screwed onto the fiberglass / heat shield portion.
      Thank you, for your response,
      Mike
