The engine on top with the dull aluminum paint looks correct. (althout the thermo housing bolts should also be dull aluminum paimted)

The throttle return spring bracket as bolted in place during the paint process so it too would be coated with dull alum paint.

This one looks good, although the bypass hose and fitting should be painted engine orange. I think the alternator lower brace should also be orange. (and a few other details)

Thanks Michael, I'll be glad to get this issue squared away once and for all. I'm addressing a few comments now in preparation for the Gettysburg Regional in May. I got nailed 12 points just for this one paint screw up last October at the Chapter Meet! PT

          PT,

          I've posted these previously.
It's a 66, but you get the idea:

            Michael,

Send me a note with the other details.
Several years later, the engine still looks like this, not yet in the car.

Patrick, how are you going to prep it before install? Squirt oil in cylinders, drill to bring up oil pressure? A guy near her told me last week he has an engine he built a few years ago (I think 10) and said when it gets a little warmer he is going to install but isn't certain all he should do.

              Thanks!

Thanks Chuck, I saved it. What really burns me up about this whole matter is that I had Jerry MacNeish reskin the manifold, which set me back $125. Man, it was beautiful. Then I read the Judging Manual and find out I had to paint the manifold silver over that beautiful reskin job!!!

                        Probably something similar to that.

It was rebuilt in 1990, then sat until my friends purchased the car in 1999 or 2000 (?). We took the engine apart, checked everything and regasketed, then reassembled. Due to their poor choice of painter the car has sat for years (long story), although the chassis is done.

                          Patrick,
I dont think you need to paint the manifold (unless you already did) just leave it natural. You will want to have some slight orange overspray on the manifold but I dont think you need to paint it silver. These are just my thoughts so if I am wrong I am sure someone will chime in with the correct info.

I agree with Michael Hanson completely about 63 thru 67. But I believe the "silver paint" treatment on alum intake & valve cover HP engines started sometime in 56, I know that all the "origional" 57 thru 62 HP cars that I have seen were painted this way, including the thermostat housing, & all bolts. The Judging Manual states on page 77:

"The L-79 350 HP engine uses an aluminum intake painted silver. Known original cars use black phosphate hex-head bolts without integral washers. The bolts may be painted silver during the intake painting process."

Sounds pretty clear to me and the judges let me know it too!
As a new comer that one confused me too. Glad to hear its a typo in the manual.

                                Hello;
                                One little detail.
Believe the oil galley plug(s) should be square head, not allen.
                                Just my 2 cents.
