68 Door Jamb & Dome Light Switch

Attached are pictures of the drive and passenger lower door jamb dome light switch. My question has two parts to it. #1. Does this switch only operate the dome light when the door is open while the upper door switch operates the door ajar warning. The second part to my questions is that does anyone know who sells the correct switch for the lower switch since I am missing the original one. The two upper switches in the jambs are still present and are working condition. Thank you in advance for the help.

    Jeff,

The dome light switch also has the control of the warning buzzer on the horn relay. If you would leave the key in the ignition and the door opens on the driver side the buzzer sounds. I'm not sure about the passenger side dome switch having this function, but most likely it does. Mine is not working at the moment or I would check. (spring project)

I had the same problem as you on the door ajar switch, missing and having just the hole on one side. Paragon is where I purchased mine. I do not believe there are any distinctive markings on the plunger as there is on the dome switch.

    Good luck,

Re: 68 Door Jamb & Dome Light Switch

Jeff, the switchs I beleive do have the SX stamped on he end of plunger, also be careful on the remove of these switchs as they will sometimes spin the metal retainer on the inside of the piller the rivits do tend to deteriorate. be sure to use some pentrating oil a few times and remove the old paint on the switch with a small wire brush , before soaking.

There are some repro switchs out there that are garbage, and there are none I know of that have the SX markings, there also a repair package for the wire termails I would rec.that thee be replaced when the switchs are replaced, you'll need small pick release the terminals.from the switch.

Jeff, I just checked my 68, both switches on both sides have SX on them.

Thank you for the info. I really appreciate it. I currently has an order in at paragon, I will talk to them today to see what they have regarding this switch to see if it is correct. Thanks again Jeff

Re: 68 Door Jamb & Dome Light Switch

I wouldn't hold my breath on the catalog part arriving with correct, factory original 'SX' head marks... The original supplier dropped that aspect of the part's assembly LONG ago!

Original SX marked switches from the era are rather scarce, ESPECIALLY the longer version of the switch used for the key minder/dome light function. The only place I know of where these were used was on Corvette...

Last, when/if you do find correct/original replacements, understand they'll probably need to be 'reset'. What's that mean?

Well, both the door ajar and dome light switches are VARIABLE in terms of their plunger length. They came from the mfgr in fully extended form. The plunger can move inside its captive hex-nut base via interference fit.

At the factory, the switch was installed in its factory fresh, fully extended, form and the door was slammed shut. This caused the plunger to move back/in on an as required basis to 'learn' the exact geometry of that specific door/jam gap.

So, you can't expect a used original switch to properly install unless you manually reset it to its fully extended position... Doing that re-adjustment can be tricky because you'll be pushing the shaft against the soft and probably now brittle plastic contact housing at the opposite end of the switch!

All repros I have seen are nowhere near correct. There is no logo and the head is much larger than the original. Contact Sal Carbone who post online here.
