    C1 Tach grommet

I know this was discussed before but I'll be darned if I can find it in the archives. I know I wrote it down too but can't seem to get this old senile brain to remember where. I need to know the way or ways to stretch the tach cable grommet over the end of the cable. Seems to me you put it in hot water to soften it up but there was something used to stretch the opening. Any and all help greatly appreciated.

    62 tach cable installation
There was a thread here this week on getting the tach cable end thru the small hole in the seal. I mentioned using a socket but this was not possible when already mounted in the car. A metal cone was also mentioned but I do not have a way of making this.

So I made one out of wood on a lathe. It worked great. I wrapped it with duct tape. I pushed the cone in from under the hood and then I went inside the car to show my wife how to pull the rope while I push from under the hood. As I was snugging up the rope it pulled right thru.

I just noticed that Chris' post was back in 2005, what I'm looking for was posted in the last few months, or so I thought.

          Terry,
In the post by Chris there is a reply from John Hinckley about using a tapered cone dipped in soapy water and then used to stretch the hole in the rubber.
It seems that if you had a old funnel (like for transmission fluid) you could cut it to make the tapered tool. I assume that once the tool is in the hole, the cable end is put in the tool and the tool is pulled through the hole??
          Good luck.

Thanks Bruce, sounds like the funnel should do it.

Why not pop the grommet out, run the cable thru the hole, then cut i slit in the grommet and work it back into the hole? That's what I would do.

That would work with the thick rubber grommets but the one for the tach is pretty thin and I'm afraid if you cut a slit in it that it will not stay in place around the cable.

                  Re: C1 Tach grommet

We used an aluminum cone in the plant - put the cone over the end of the cable (threaded ferrule inside the big end of the cone), dipped the cone in 50-50 Joy soap/water solution, and pushed the cone/cable through the hole in the grommet, then removed the cone.

Chris made the wooden cone in his photos based on a sketch I gave him of the plant tool.

Don't slit the grommet - that destroys the seal.
