Ok think I found a engine for my 58, did research still need some help on this one.

    Ok

I somewhat know the decode format from research FXXXXYY

The engine I found the guy says came from a 58 corvette. He said the numbers on the pad are "F5I3P"

numbers on the back are 6 "SPACE" 3737739

Now, from what little I know the F= flint, 5= may, I= 1, 3= 3 (so 13th) now what about the P? I thought there was a 2 letter engine HP prefix not 1 letter?

My 58's birthday is july 16-17th 1958..so I am thinking this engine may work but can't decode it fully to what I've read on the internet and searched for in archives on here.

thanks for any help, this is my 1st c1 I know c3's pretty good but new to c1's.

My wild arse guess is that 'P' suffix is really a 'D' meaning the block was originally from a passenger car with single 2-Bbl and powerglide tranny configuration. That's probably the most common suffix code stamping from the era...

The fact that it 'came out of a Corvette' does NOT say it was that Corvette's factory original block, eh? And, yes, Corvette engines were stamped with 2-alpha suffix codes since there never was a Corvette with V8, 2 Bbl configuration...

Yea, it's hard to say trying to deal with people who don't give you much info because they have no clue.

had another block tracked down awhile back but he said the suffix is CD..which didn't make any sense for a 58, everything else matched up.

brandon, give you some of the basic codes. CQ(230 hp, 1x4 bc & manual transmission), DG(230 hp, 1x4 bc & powerglide transmission), CT(245 hp, 2x4 bc & manual transmission), DJ(245 hp, 2x4 bc & powerglide transmission), CU(270 hp, hi-lift cam & manual transmission). the CU not available in 58 until 1/20/58. various fuelly codes DH, CR & CS.

P suffix code for that year engine would be a 50 or 60 series truck engine. Big truck!

              Brandon,
There is a great little book called "The Lime Book" which lists all the engine letter sufixes.
              Very informative.
Some NCRS guy wrote, actually he replied to your question.

Ed, I don't see a single "P" listed in the book, is that some new info?

Ed's right about the 'P' code. It's listed in Hollander's (along with approximately 66 other Chevy engine codes)...

The POS book needs to be revised, but I ain't doing it. Too many players in that arena now, and too much work involved.
