    57 Tach

I have noticed the tach does not go all the way down to zero when car is off, I do know the gauge was rebuilt, i can turn the cable by hand to get it to go to zero but it comes back up to 100-200. Is there a calibration screw (or zero set on the back side) that can be set to read zero. Also when i reeve the engine the tach makes a "draggin" type noise. I have been told this may be the reason for too long of a cable, to trim the end of the cable.
One last item, can anyone recommend how to check calibration of temp gauge? Mine was not reading correctly and i have changed the sending unit. This guage was also rebuilt before i purchased the car. I have heard of using a laser on the intake mainfold near the sending unit. Anybody else think of a another method or use the laser. What happened in the days before the laser?

Chris, Maybe the guys will tell you the best kind of lubricant to put on the tach cable as it sounds like yours is very dry or is binding.
You didn't ask but on your FI drive cable I suggest you use lots of disc brake wheel bearing grease. Any brand will do.
Maybe the disc brake grease will work on the tach cable but I have no clue as never did it. JD

the wierd noise to me sounds like the cable slipping, maybe the cable is too short? Only when i reave the engine it makes the noise?

Sounds like a bad cable , keep looking for a real one, most suppliers sell the wrong one and design .
Did you try dis-connecting the cable at the tack and see if it drops to normal

          Chris -

In the days before I.R. guns, people used thermometers in the open, unpressurized radiator or taped to the upper radiator hose; the I.R. gun is now the diagnostic tool of choice.

Temperature gauge and sending unit calibration is a complex subject; suggest you utilize the "search" function with "temp gauge", "temp sender", and "temperature gauge" as keywords - there are LOADS of threads on the subject.
