    Texas Safety Inspection

My '65 Coupe recently failed the Texas safety inspection at a Goodyear store. The technician told me the reason was that the 7.75 x15 bias-ply rear tires had less than the required 2/32" of tread. When I questioned his statement, he showed me that the very inside "rib" (?) of the tire tread was worn down. All the other parts of the tire had plenty of tread. This wear on the inside of the tire was probably caused by the factory rear suspension setting using negative camber.

Well, I ordered four new repro bias-belted tires ($675) so that all four would match. I took the new tires to my restoration shop for mounting on my repro KO wheels. When the resto shop owner asked me why I was putting on new tires, I told him that it was because of failing the state inspection. He was aghast and told me that there was no way those tires he just removed would cause my car to fail the state safety inspection. He told me to speak to the manager of the Goodyear store.

Today, I spoke to the Goodyear store manager and told him what I was told. I reminded him that I owned five cars and did a great deal of business with his shop every year, oil changes, state inspections, tires, A/C service, etc. He was adamant that the condition of my car's rear tires would cause my car to fail at any shop that performed state inspections. He said that they, by law, had to go by the state book. I asked him to show me the book. He turned to the appropriate page in the state inspection book and indeed, it clearly stated that the tread on all tires must be at least 2/32" deep. However, as I then pointed out to the manager, it continued to state that this minimum depth was as measured from the middle, or center, of the tire. When I asked the manager to read that last bit, he bristled and did not agree with me that his shop made an error in the interpretation of the state book.

Don't you have your Corvette registered as an antique?

      You should be exempt.

The same thing happened to me with my 68 1/2 Cobra Jet in Houston after I put on the original equipment Goodyear PolyGlas GT tires. I just went to a JiffyLube type place and they passed it fine. The Texas antique plate and registration is very restrictive on mileage and useage. I got a ticket for it after a cop saw me several times the same day cruising around. I switched to 1968 Hemisfair TX plates registered as normal, but you do need a safety inspection but nothig more.

In the mid 70's when I was a resident of Dallas, TX I took my 68 to a Shell station where we bought gas for an inspection.
I was told that the taillight lenses did not pass inspection because of a few cracks in the ourter edges. The stoplight/turnsignal light uses the middle of the lens when illuminated. I drove right up the street to Sears and got my inspection sticker and stopped buying gas at the Shell station. Still have the original lenses in the 68.

While growing up we had a family friend that owned a gas station with a repair shop. I worked there on weekends and on and off for a number of years.

Two or three times a week we would have a customer come in who had just failed a state safety inspection at a local Goodyear or Firestone dealer. Often, they were told their car was dangerous to drive as the steering required a complete overhaul.

If the customer questioned it, they would take them out to the car on the lift and twist the tie rod ends and tell them there shouldn't be any movement.

I was often tempted to take my car there and let them try that on me.....

Clark, www.txdmv.gov has the info. on Antique and Classic registration. Short story is both types have to be 25 years or older, Antique is for minimal driving like parades, club events, etc., and Classic can be driven more often, "regularly". Antique does not require inspection, Classic does.

Inspections outside of Metroplex, Houston, San Antonio, Austin are more lax by law, especially on emissions requirements.

I would report the store, manager, and technician to GY and the State for failure to enforce the rules as written. 'Trying to sell you a set of tires?

I live in Maryland, the "Nanny State". One good thing though is if your car is at least 25 years old and unmodified, you can get "Historic" tags, which I have. If it is modified, you can get "Street Rod" tags. Neither tag requires any inspection or emissions testing for as long as you own the car. PT

                    Clark,
I have model year Texas plates on both my '64 and '68 and have never had a problem with law enforcement stopping me for the plates.

I do not have Texas inspection stickers on either car, not required for a car 25 years old or older and I have never had a problem with law enforcement.

Buy a nice set to '65 plates, take them to your local court house and request that you be allowed to use them on your car. Works without a hitch in Harris County. You may get either a small metal tag to affix to the rear plate or you may get a sticker for the windshield. I have had a metal tag, never had a windshield sticker and in fact have never seen one although someone at a car show told me that they were issued one when using year model plates.

Like Tom said, find someone other than a tire outlet for state inspection on any of your cars. Mr. Sticker works for me.

                    Cheers,

In NC, you have to have less than 2/32" in two adjacent groves before they will fail.

In Okla, several years ago, former Gov Frank Keating "kicked out" all state inspection requirements, 70yr old cars, brand new car, didn't matter!

Gov Keating had to be a Republican, God Bless Him! Less regulation.

                            Dick,

I've heard that no NC safety inspection is required for vehicles 30? years old, but I have'nt checked this out. I've also heard that you can display a model year plate if you have a valid plate inside the car, with appropriate registration. But like I said, I have'nt checked this out.

In Okla, we have several license tag options. EACH option requires that the regular tag be with the car at all times.
                              The options are:
                              Regular tag
Old tag (same year as car for example)
Antique tag (limits amount of driving)
                              Personalized tag-no limit on driving.
