    63 Spare Tire Lock

Until what Vin. Number did the lock come with no hole in lock. Or did all 63's have the 1/4" hole.

Gary, you are correct. Early 63 locks had no drain hole. I'm guessing to around VIN 1000, but again just a guess. Also, no rubber boot and it should be keyed the same as all the other locks in the car.

      Re: 63 Spare Tire Lock

Gary/Harry - I asked one of the "63 gurus" the question regarding the change of the spare tire lock configuration from no drain hole to the one with the 1/4" dia. drain hole and I was told this change occurred around the end of calendar year 1962 or the beginning of the 1963 calendar year.

We know according to TSB DR #610, "Spare Tire Lock Corrosion - 1963 Corvette" that beginning with March 15, 1963 production, the protective boot Part No. 3841701 will be installed to prevent corroding of the lock. Unfortunately, there is no mention of this change in the lock configuration from no drain hole to the 1/4" dia. drain hole; but then there was no mention that I am aware of regarding the change to the 3/8" dia. drain hole for 1966 production.

From what I can gather, no matter whether there was a drain hole or not without the protective boot, the early 1963 spare tire locks were subject to jamming due to the accumulation of dirt and salt deposits in the lock cylinder. Can you imagine driving your Corvette on roads with dirt and salt. Pete

          Thanks Pete/harry
So it's safe to say my Jan. 63 car should have the 1/4' hole

Gary, Yes it's safe to say that. Get your lock from Lindahl if you don't have one. Also let Peter reproduce your keys as his knockout stamped characters are right on the money. His keys work perfect and pass thru judging with no problem. JD
