    Engine Block Pad Pictures

I am working on my Power Point presentation for a 2010 WNYNCRS Judging School presentation. I am in need of pictures of engine pads, original and non-original pads for the 1953 to 1962 model years.

    Thanks for the help!

Chemical or thinner slowly and carefully on a cloth, no sharp metal tools.

        Hi E. J.
        You might ask Ray first.
If he can use it as is, just leave it.

Check the C1 and C2 registry. They have several pictures of pads on there web site.

            EJ--
As I recall, you got that from the original owner, right? I'm surprised by the stamping--it looks like the "F" following the "R" is out of alignment (a little bit higher than the rest.) Is that just my imagination? I've owned and logged in a bunch of 62 fuelies, and I've never seen a high F on an original stamping.
            Regards,
            Mike

EJ, you do not need to remove the paint for me, a pad with paint on it will be good for discussion. If you decide to remove the paint, be careful not to damage the pad, I work from the head to the front of the block using a plastic putty knife and an old rag. I would use a chemical stripper to remove the paint and then coat with grease or oil to prevent rust. A good lesson I learned was to wipe the oil from the dipstick after an oil check onto the the pad. This is a good way of not forgetting to coat the pad.

Thanks for the lead to the C-1 Registry, copied a few good pads form the site. On the site is a early 1960 pad with out the VIN number. I believed that the VIN was added around December of 59. When would one see the first VIN number on a 1960 pad?

                Thanks for the help!

Mike, I don't want to start a _ _ _ _ storm here, but you make a good point. There was a suffix "R" for 327, std. trans., in 1962 used in full size passenger cars. I have never seen an F align like this one either.

                    Re: Engine Block Pad Pictures

Here is one I have owned since 1975. I took this complete late 61 283/270 engine out of a 1955 Corvette where it had been for some time. Note there is no vin on the pad.

The block is cast 3789935 and date F 20 1.

                    The heads are cast 3774692 and dated F 16 1 and F 18 1.

I believe this engine to be an over the counter engine assembly but who knows. I don't know the history of the '55 other than it was red and came out of Florida to Indiana. I changed the engine for the owner who immediately sold the car.

                      Re: Engine Block Pad Pictures

Ray: I am sending you a CD with various "C1" engine and block photos. I have included some FI units just in case. There's a couple of T10s shown also. There's not a lot, but something from this might fit in your slides. If you want the background on a particular photo, simply ask.

I didn't include the dealer's "type-writer entered" engine number, added to the original owner's warranty document for my '60. I could photograph that if you wish. (Actually, it may be in the archives here.) I don't know if this was common practice, recommended by GM... but I suspect it was done to record which engine the car had at delivery.

You need 1960 FI exhaust manifold photos?

Thanks! James, Great pictures. Would you have an educated guess on the approximate date for the first vin number on a 1960 model year block? I will include the picture of the early pad you provided and information you sent about being the earliest 60 pad stamp with vin number that you have seen.
