68 engine decal questions for engine suffix placement & master cylinder YA

I have all my decal kit placed on the newly re-chromed original valve covers and air lid, and the emissions decal on the radiator since my 68 is an early one. Also the silver decal on the pass side valve cover towards the front.

I don't know exactly where the engine suffix yellow sticker goes though. I know it goes towards the rear of the pass valve cover but where exactly? anyone have a piture of an original that just happen to stay in tact or remember where their original was? or post a picture of one put on where an original would have been. Could go on the back side rear top near the back..I mean the manual really doesn't go into detail.

another question is for the master cylinder on the 2 sets of wire clamps that hold the cover on which one does it go on and how exactly? again a picture of a correct car here would help a lot too.

thanks! and yes I did search the net and the forum

You should have got something from a search of this site for the engine suffix label. It is an often discussed subject -- although not usually the location of it. There have been threads with pictures.

It was not placed very precisely -- people, not machines did it. Back side of the passenger side rocker arm cover. They are easiest to see (on small blocks) in the reflection of the vertical ignition shielding. They were supposed to be visible when the engine was in the shipping rack, before the ignition shielding was installed.

Now we can talk about the original 1970 I saw with the suffix label on both ends of the passenger side RA cover, or the one with two labels one over the other – and the lower one was the wrong suffix.

Edit add: The bail tag goes on the rear bail for the most part. The print showes it on the front, but almost all originals are on the rear. Go figure.

thanks, and yeah I didn't really get any detail or pictures on the search on here but I'll give it another shot.

thanks for the input because the only photo I found on a decent looking engine bay showed the master cylinder decal on the front bail..I'll go with the rear, will look again for a photo of that one too.

Looked through a lot of threads again never found a picture of either. So, if anyone has a nice engine bay on their 68 bb I would appreciate it if you would post it. Since I didn't find one on here it would be a great post for anyone with a 68 bb.

mine is an l36 so if yours is an l36 it would be that much better.

again, thanks for any pics, advice, past knowledge etcetc.

anyway thanks for the post thats the first picture I've actually seen with the decal in place.

Maybe my memory about the master cylinder tag is wrong. Are you sure the TIM&JG doesn't say which bail it goes on?

Found this 69 engine bay that judged at 94% which shows it at the rear bail haha who knows maybe it's not that important but would rather put it where it should be.

Oh so you're a judge? well your op on this is all I need then. So, would you say the picture of the yellow 69's engine bay shows the decal the way it should be placed?

I guess I'm just a little confused on not only which bail but where on it was it normally put at. The guy posted earlier the decal on the first bail on the top of the bail. The 69 bb is on the back bail but on the side.

so besides which bail, where is was normal? top or side.

Hey being an NCRS judge means little. There are around 7000 people who can legitimately claim to be an NCRS judge. Few have more judging points than I do, but that doesn't mean too much either. It just shows I have participated in many NCRS events. It does NOT mean I learned anything.

And so long as we are on that kind of stuff I was 1970-1972 National Team Leader for ten or fifteen years back in the old days when C3 Corvettes were still used cars.

My opinion counts for little and other folks who are more active in judging today may have differing opinions. You know the line about opinions and certain parts of the body....

If you put the tag on a bail it will eventually, with heat and wind, move to wherever it wants. You can move it for show, but it will slide back. Don't worry about where it rests. The master cylinder tag, like the engine suffix label served a purpose as the assemblers were pulling assemblies from the supply racks beside the assembly line. Today they only serve to amuse us as we play our games.

                          Brandon,

If you're going to restore details of your car to factory original, it's always better to use a known untouched car as an example rather than a restored one. I'm not sure I'd unquestioningly use one of cars in the photos above as a guide.

Like Terry, I have never deducted on the bail tag, as long as it was there. But what do us old folks know. We have only been judging these cars since 1985? or so. Just looked at one or two.

Well, I wasn't going to tell, but the picture I found was when my car was two months old, and is too big to post. What does it matter anyway? Mine is a 1970, and Brandon wants to know about a 1968.

What did we used to say in the military? "Don't sweat the small stuff." Well something like that, anyway.
