I have two distributor caps that I believe are for a 1966 big block. Can anyone tell me what other years and engines use the same cap? Thanks much.

Re: 1966 Distributor Cap Applications
Hum, not quite true, 1958 was the first year useage of the D-308 on Corvette (8 Cyl cap with single lift window for point adjustment), but it was relegated to the base engine car (single 4-Bbl). The dual four cars continued to use the earlier design cap, D-305, (no lift window) and FI engines used another version with the later FI C1 cars running D-324 (dual lift window) caps...
Then, the exceptions to the standard D-308 in the C2 line up were L88 (D-309, brown in color) and '63-65 FI cars (D-310, shorter plug wire towers). These each are considered an exception to the conventional D-308.
Plus, it's now thought that the D-308 with 'Patent Pending' and 'R' emboss continued to be used up through 1972 on C3 cars other than L88. So, the answer is a little more complex than what's stated above...Last edited by Jack H.; December 29, 2009, 10:03 AM.- Top

Scrounged this short tower D-310 off a junkyard '64 Olds Hearse; complete w/original dated plug wires.

Re: 1966 Distributor Cap Applications
Same 1111240 distr. dwgs, sheet # 2; cap and latch assy. shows originally (4-4-66) as part # 800061., with revision note #4, which looks to be dated sometime in Jan of 1968 "800061 cap & latch assy. was 1942654" The word "was" doesn't make sense. This latter '654' number is the plain 'ol vanilla service cap number for most Chev V8's, at least as early as Oct 1965.
Over the eBay years 2002 to about 2005, I used to take note of cap auctions, and tried to make sense of the color of the bakelite and material of the contacts, along with the color of the box and the Delco short # as well as the GM long #. I gave up after 5 years of this because there were so many variations.
In many cases, #800061 is in a D-309 box (sometimes with an R after the 309, in which case there's an R molded in the top of the cap). All D-309's seem to be brown and have copper contacts. But then I've noted other instances that contradict this pattern.- Top

Re: 1966 Distributor Cap Applications
But it's fun can of worms and use of the D308 distributor cap include 8 cylinder applications on various models and years of cars made by American Motors, Buick, Cadillac, Camaro, Checker Motors, Chevelle, Chevy II/Nova, Chevrolet (Passenger), Monte Carlo, Chevrolet Trucks, Olds F-85, Firebird, GMC Truck, Jeep (Willys), Oldsmobile, Toronado, Pontiac, Tempest/GTO, Studebaker (Passenger)/Avanti, and of course our favorite the Corvette.
