    Original Papers - 1962

My Girlfriends Father had a 1962 corvette, 327 -360 hp. Sold it many years ago (45). but he still maintains the original papers Bill of sale, window sticker, etc. I told him that they might be worth a lot to the person who owns that car now.

What does everybody think my chances of tracking this car down?

    Appreciate any suggestions.

It is not in the C1 Registry..... http://www.c1registry.com.

The odds are against finding it but you just never know.

p.s. it is exactly 10,900 cars later than mine.

            James-
You should maybe consider an ad in the driveline (it's free), I always scan the "information " ads for info wanted on cars. There have been quite a few that have gone through my hands.
            Just an idea, good luck

There is a link at the top of this page-"submit driveline ad". It won't come out for a month or so, but you may make the owner of that Corvette very happy if you find him. I would suggest putting it in the information section.

                      Hi Jim,

Does your girlfriend's father have a name or any other contact information about the person he sold the car to 45 years ago?

For a New Year's present, get him in the car and take the document and get it laminated, completed with the 3 holes (in the lamination) for storage in a binder - don't let it get into any worse condition, torn, etc. Lamination, through size alone, makes it harder to lose.

                          Hi James and Loren,

Due to my recent experience with a severely damaged (but thankfully still legible) tank sticker, I found an article referenced here on the Forum about tank sticker preservation (it would have been good to read it before I tried to remove the dirt on mine, but that's another story!).

Here's the link to the first page, links to the subsequent pages are at the bottom: http://www.yankeelady.com/library/no...assticker1.htm

On page three, there is a sort of "testimonial" involving someone who laminated their tank tank sticker, followed by a reply from a document specialist. Based on the following excerpt, I would recommend looking into the subject of laminating any old documents further, before doing anything irreversible and/or potentially harmful with them:

                          Question:
"Mr. Edmondson, I read an article by Barbara Spear regarding documentation of corvette gas tank stickers. You and your company was credited as an expert source. I was hoping you would not mind providing a few comments about what I have done to my sticker. I had removed the tank sticker (before reading the article by Barbara) and placed it between two laminated sheets (pre-glued). My questions are:

                          1) Will this prove to be a terrible thing I have done (i.e. not help to preserve the document)?

                          2) If so what would be a recommended way to reverse this action.

                          Thank-you for your time.
                          Gary F. LeDuc"

                          Reply:
                          "Dear Gary:
Not knowing what the laminate material is makes it difficult to give you more than an "educated guess" type of answer. I do suspect, however, that the odds are against you on this one. The vast majority of laminating materials are not considered appropriate for important archival pieces (or even unimportant, for that matter), and actually the procedure of lamination as a preservation option has generally fallen into disuse throughout our profession. Many of the plastics are chemically unstable themselves, meaning that they off-gas plasticizers which often combine with moisture in the atmosphere to create acidic compounds which deteriorate the paper, and as they off-gas turn dark or yellowish and also become brittle in the process. Furthermore, many of the adhesives also are unstable and turn dark or sink into the paper turning it translucent and making the printing very difficult to read. These adhesives are often soluble only in very toxic solvents, which may also attack the inks used in the document. Many laminates require heat to set them. Reversal of laminates can be impossible, but can also be accomplished, we never know until we get into it. The problem is that if it doesn't come off, most of the time the document is in worse condition, or even destroyed.

I would recommend getting archival quality bond paper, call University Products at 800-628-1912 and request a catalog of their archival storage materials, it might cost a few dollars, but you will find it interesting and may find many other items in it for storing your other important papers. Once you have the archival bond paper you can copy the sticker at a good Xerox station--make sure the copy ink is stable and won't fade or rub off the paper. Store the original sticker in a dark place with reasonably stable temperature and relative humidity conditions.

I'm sorry that I don't have more positive information for you, but the issue of lamination materials is still under some investigation, and generally a problem that is best left alone once it has been done. If you think you want to pursue this further we can do an examination and testing to determine if it is a treatable situation. This will cost about $100.00 and includes a written report and treatment recommendations. We have an 8 month backlog right now, although we would be able to do the testing, etc., right after the holidays. But, I encourage you to provide good storage conditions, make an archival copy, and don't berate yourself.

Wishing you the best for the holidays, I am,

                          Sincerely,
                          Thomas M. Edmondson, Conservator

This is the best route, I have been looking for the person who bought my 59 corvette when I was drafted in 1970. You can also search any states DOT database, But the major problem is that most states only hold onto automobile registrations papers for about ten years and they are then destroyed. After that, there is no real pathway going backwards. I tried like hell to find out who bought my 59, but after a point, Pennsylvania Department Of Transportation wouldn't even answer my on-going questions anymore.

FWIW: For all the papers for my 2008 -- including three build sheets, two of which are the real ones from the assembly line -- I got an archival storage box and sheets of acid-free paper. ALL the documents are in the box between sheets of the acid-free paper except one of the copies of the window sticker which was a gift from a well-meaning friend who paid extra to have it laminated. Since it is a computer generated copy, it is not significant anyway and I can get more form The Museum whenever I want. I store that item on-view in the house. The rest of the items are in the garage, although I would prefer a more moderate climate if it were available. I am sure those items will last longer than I will.
