Hello to all fellow members; I would first like to give a big thanks to all the members involved with the latest publication of the 56/57 Tech manual. It is a great help to me with the resto of my 56. Job well done ! I am currently rebuilding the motor and detailing the engine compartment. I have the 3spd tranny out and would like to know what color to paint it after cleaning. Also I have checked the cast #'s on the main case (3845122, B235) and side cover plate (3731911) that check out as being correct for a 56. Mytailstock has the following cast #'s : GM1 E182-3787067 the Tech manual say's the tailstock should be 3722946 . Can anyone tell me what my tailstock #'s would be applicable to ? My VIN is 2291. Thanks kindly, Jim Kish

Re: 56 Tranny questions
Jim, Finish is natural cast iron. Tailshaft 3787067 was first introduced in 61-2 Corvettes. There should be a date code on it. Maincase date of B235 (Feb 23 1955) is too early for your VIN 2291 (early May 1956 assembly). Dates should be within 6 months of assembly date. Clutch input shaft on Corvettes was same diameter between clutch spline and input bearing. Pass car clutch input shafts narrowed to smaller diameter after clutch spline. Shifter should have a narrow rectangular shift gate. Attached link to 3 speed transmission gear and shifter info previously posted and scan of P&A 3 speed transmission breakdown. Hope this info helps. Good luck with your 56 restoration. Gary....

Re: 56 Tranny questions
Jim,
Good luck with finding a trade. The 56 394 tailshaft is an expensive and tough to find component. I was lucky enough to find one locally near my home...in fact I did just what you want to do. Only I traded a 57 for a 56. It all worked out and I'm now working on the body on my car since the chassis and engine are all finally finished. I may actually get to start it and drive it in 2010! Good luck on the project. What color and engine option is your car?
