Have part number 4940459 NOS shocks. The best I can remember these were purchased in 1987. Opened the box today and the shock has the following stamped into the shock, 316 87, 4940607, DELCO PRODUCTS, DAYTON OHIO, USA. They are semi gloss black with no dust shield or cap. Can anyone comment on the application of these shocks? Years, option, how close are they to original, etc. Thanks.

These are the last available SERVICE version of the HD rear shocks. At the moment I'm out-of-town and can't check on them as far as PRODUCTION use is concerned. However, if this configuration shock was ever used in PRODUCTION, I think it was only for late C-3 with FE-7 suspension. It is possible that this part number was used earlier than that but, if so, I think configuration later changed. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: F40 F41 shocks rear
I am convinced these shocks were used in production after the first of the 1969 calendar year. That is to say, on 1969 model year Corvettes, this 607 part number was used on the assembly line for F41 rear shocks. I also believe the 488 was continued in production throughout, at least, the 1969 model year run.
I can provide pictures, if anyone likes, of original 607 shocks dated 099-69. I can also get pictures of 607 shocks dated 006-69. I have never seen a 489 dated F41 rear after the last week of December, 1969. There is a clear cut line on the F41 rears. Of the Bowtie candidates I have been fortunate enough to judge, this break line seems accurate.
I have communicated this with Joe in the past and we have exchanged emails about the change posibly coinciding with the above mentioned cut line. Since Joe is out of town, I have included his correspondence with me.

Mark

I think that the change in the F-41 shocks occurred
late in the 1969 model year. I'm not sure if the
fronts and rear changed at the same time, though. I
expect that they did not.
The 63-69 F-41 shocks were larger in OD than the
69-75. Earlier versions of the 69-75 rears I believe
have the larger diameter "coullee hat"; later have the
smaller diameter. I don't know when the change
occurred, though. The p/n of the rear shocks did not
change when the "hat" changed.

Re: F40 F41 shocks rear
Included are several PICS of a set of original NOS 607 F41s I purchased many years ago from, I believe, Lou Groebner. These shocks are both dated 099-69 and have the large hat with the smaller (than a 489) body.
