Fan Clutch Bolts

Need some advice on fan to clutch and clutch to water pump bolts. My '66 427 had studs in the water pump flange and bolts in the fan to clutch flange. LI shows bolts in the water pump attachment and studs with nuts in the fan to clutch attachment. As I recall from the old days the studs go in the water pump and bolts go on the clutch. Help appreciated!

Bolts thru clutch hub ( 2_5/16" dia.) to water pump flange. Nuts to attach fan to studs on the rear side of the clutch assembly. Shows up clearly in the AIM (UPC 6, Sheet A3, at least in the '65 version).

Believe LI has it correct however to get it correct look at your AIM. Try Section 6, sheet A3.00 (that's a 64AIM) Also try a search on fans and I bet you find some good pictures.

Do not depend upon LI or any vendor to have it correct, they all try and most do a very good job however they all have mistakes (most will never tell you that) Unfortunately some of those mistakes are becoming standards during judging.

Hi George,

Yes, both Wayne and Alan were correct directing you to AIM UPC 6 Sheet A3. Same page in the '66 Assembly Manual. I compared my '65 and '66 AIM and the bolts, nuts and lock washers are all the same part #s. I've done alot of research through the years for the correct hardware required to bring my '66 L36 with AC back to as original as possible. I see you've got one too. I'd really like to chat with you about our cars and the anomalies associated with them.

The hardware listed on sheet A3 to the best of my knowledge should be as follows:

Nut #120368: 5/16 - 24 x .250", cad. plate

L. Washer #103320: 5/16" ID x .575" OD x .085" black oxide

Bolt #186634: 5/16 - 24 x 1" cad. plate, grade 8, "RSC" headmark. Some other known headmarks may be: "L8", "AS", "S", "SBC". Sure there's more.

L. Washer #187119: 5/16" ID, cad. plate (still researching complete info)

If you are going to be using the hex nuts then pay a few cents more for them and get them graded. I always use graded nuts. JD

AIM is abbreviation for Assembly Instruction Manual, which the factory assembly line workers used when constructing new corvettes. ther is one available for you 66 , as well as other years, thru the Membership services.good luck,mike

Hello Walter,

When I bought my '66 convertible back in '88 the first thing I did was buy the 1966 Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM). I didn't know about NCRS back then and I had no local Corvette buddies when I lived out in SW Oklahoma so I was pretty much on my own. Lucky you. You've found THE BEST source for all your Corvette research early on. The NCRS!

I'd like to suggest some other publications that really helped me through the early years as well as continuing to assist me today.

-M.F. Dobbins Vette Vues Fact Book of the '63~'67 Sting Ray
-NCRS '66 Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide

I don't know the fine folks who penned these pubs, but I can't thank them enough for all the great info they shared with me and others.

One last suggestion. When/If you disassemble any part of your car, have your assembly manual open to that job and freezer bag all parts as you do so. I always mark (permanent marker) the zipper bag with the AIM page and part #(s). Nothing's ever got away from me yet that way. If you ever need any help, contact me.
