I am looking at a car that had the power glide removed and a 4 speed put in. And has a vintage a/c kit put in. How much will this lower the points and the value of the car .. If I buy the car I want to at least retain the money I paid for it.Tom

Re: Point Hit??
The 4-speed conversion might be undetectable if it was done correctly with the right parts (it isn't coded as an ECL on a '63 trim tag), but the engine stamp pad suffix code will show it as a Powerglide engine, and the carburetor will also show as a Powerglide part.
A savvy judge might take a clue from the suffix and look for Powerglide remnants (like the rivnuts for the trans cooler attachment in the radiator support), and the hit would be for all the missing Powerglide parts.
The Vintage Air A/C system would take a hit for all the missing heater/defroster parts.- Top

Re: Point Hit??
Thanks John, the car looks really decent except for the changes I stated. The seller is supposed to supply me with tha stamp pad a nd trim tag pics! I will see then what everything looks like. Any idea on how much the value of the car would drop because of these changes? I have been shopping for a C-2 coupe for a long time, I don't want to make a mistake now. Thanks Tom- Top

Re: Point Hit??
Tom, you are facing a common dilemma with a vintage Corvette. A car that has been modified in order for the owner to enjoy it more may never be a Top Flight car. A Top Flight car may never be the car you truly want. Each can have a high resale value dependent upon condition and other variables. That is the dilemma.
About a year ago, I bought the car of my dreams. It gets loads of attention and trophies. Only at NCRS judging meets does the added side exhaust, reproduction KO wheels, and showcar quality paint hurt it.
In the end, you may choose to decide against the car in question if you truly want a Top Flight car. But, if this car is EXACTLY what you have always wanted by having the options you like (4 speed, etc.), then go for it. -Clark- Top

Re: Point Hit??
why do people worry about loosing money on a corvette because it is a toy not a investment? a corvette collector once told me if they have made more the single digits,1 to 9 of them you can never count on the value going up or even staying the same. if you plan on making $$$ on your corvette you be just as well off investing with bernie who madeoff with their moneyLast edited by Clem Z.; December 25, 2009, 03:12 PM.- Top

Re: Point Hit??
Tom,
I've made Top Flight twice with a Vintage Air system on my 67. But I like to drive to events, and around town all the time.
The point deduct for the Vintage Air system depending upon the judge and your pulley configuration I found is much less than 1%. That can be recouped by driving 100 miles to an event.
Would rather have something that's drivable in the summer than just a showpiece. Just love that Vintage Air system.Jerry Fuccillo

Jerry
Thanks for the info. I want a nice coupe to drive to shows. And a/c is a must in Fla. As far as changing a car from power glide to 4 speed would certainly not help to top flight but not hurt the value to much because the 4 speeds are more popular? Catch 22 I geuss. Tom- Top
