    First of all, you do not absolutely need the compressor tool. However, it is a LOT easier with it.

    Actually it is just the opposite. You need to lock the upper shaft from telescoping in order to use the compressor tool. You can install and tighten the star screw to lock the shaft. However, the star screw does interfere with some tools. So you can use a #20 allen set screw 5/16-18 UNC thread. And thread it down inside the upper shaft to lock it.

      But, you will be lucky if you don't break something or stab yourself with those screwdrivers. Look at the tool. Its easy to make one.
