67 BB Powerglide Expert Help Needed

Joe Lucia was able to provide me with this:

You're definitely looking for a "rare bird". The part number for the transmission was GM #3895728. It was used for both L-36 and L-68 for the 1967 model year. However, it was never available in SERVICE. Since it was not available in SERVICE I can't come up with any other applications. However, I expect there were few or none. Here's why: by 1967 most Chevrolet applications with large CID engines and automatic transmission used the THM-400. Corvette was pretty much the lone "holdout". That changed, of course, for the 1968 model year. In any event, I doubt that there were many, if any, other applications for 1967 that required a "HD" Powerglide.

In any event, the transmission case was the same for all of the Powerglide transmissions used for 1967. It was GM #3869187 (early) and GM #3902841 (later). Unfortunately, these are PART NUMBERS which appear nowhere on the case and I do not know what the casting numbers, which appear on the case, were. However, if you can find a 1967 Powerglide from any Chevrolet application, you should have the right CASE. A Powerglide trans expert could probably rebuild it to the same or equivalent internal specs as the original big block Powerglide.

You also need underpan GM #3831527. This underpan was also used for other Chevrolet applications over the 1963-69 period equipped with 350, 396, and 409 engines and Powerglide. It was discontinued without supercession in May, 1985.

I am hoping you can give additional direction for the following:

    What is considered early production?
Depending on early or late build, what are the PG casting numbers?

I believe 5 bands PG were considered HD. Is this correct and can you tell from the outside case?
Will the date code on the underpan be the 66 or 67 format?
How far should the PG date precede the build date in the perfect world? (Not the 6 mo rule)
    Is the flywheel the same?
Is there a special flywheel cover?
Is the kick down linkage the same?
Is there an early or late shifter?
Is there a special linkage Cover?
Is the torque converter 3905861? And is that BB PG specific?
How far should the 3888 carb precede the engine build in the perfect world?

With all that said, does anyone know who might have some of these parts, pictures or an early PG BB that I can confirm part numbers and dates??????

    What is considered early production?

As far as the 1967 Powerglide transmission goes, I think that early production would be something like most 1966-built cars. I don't think the early case would have been used much after that, if even that long.
Depending on early or late build, what are the PG casting numbers?

As I mentioned, I don't have these. However, if we could hear from some others with 1967's with Powerglide, I think we could nail this down. The case would have been the same for either small block or big block applications.

I believe that all Corvette Powerglides from, at least, 1965 were manufactured at Toledo, OH.

I believe 5 bands PG were considered HD. Is this correct and can you tell from the outside case?

I don't know as far as band configuration goes. However, I don't think here's any way to determine internal configuration of the transmission, including bands, from outside the case.

    I don't know
How far should the PG date precede the build date in the perfect world? (Not the 6 mo rule)

I would say 1 month or less. For a transmission like this one, though, it might be more because I doubt that many were used.
    Is the flywheel the same?

Flex plate (flywheel) was NOT the same as small block. Flywheel was GM #3899668
Is there a special flywheel cover?

The one (underpan) I described in my previous post

Is the kick down linkage the same?

If you mean the same as small block, I don't think it was the same

Is there an early or late shifter?

    Not that I know of.
Is there a special linkage Cover?

    I don't know
Is the torque converter 3905861? And is that BB PG specific?

GM #3905861 is the correct part number. As afr as Corvettes go, it was big block-specific. It was also used for passenger cars with big block and passenger cars with 350 cid and Powerglide.

How far should the 3888 carb precede the engine build in the perfect world?
    In Appreciation of John Hinckley
