    Rebound Straps

I looked through the archives and couldn't find an answer to my problem. I am trying to install my rebound straps. I am working on a 58. I can't get the rear springs to compress enough to get the straps to fit...not even close. I am using the cc straps and they measure at 27 1/4". I have the springs moubted with the axle housing secured. The shocks are not installed. What am I doing wrong?

James, just curious are the rear shackles below the frame or above the frame? Gary....

get a ratcheting tie down strap(lowes, home depot, Sams). one side at a time, wrap the strap around the axle housing and the frame and tighten the ratchet till the reboud strap rivets can be installed. there is tension on the rebound strap once the c-1 is elevated off the ground. once the body is on the frame and the car left down off lift or jack stands, the weight of the car will allow the rebound straps to relax. mike

Gary. The shackles are below the frame...I think you may have the answer!

Jim, you might have to follow Mike's advice about using rachet straps to simulate putting weight on the frame until the body drop. Good luck, Gary....

By placing a floor jack under the center of the leaf springs and directly under the axle and jacking it up, you can accomplish putting the rebound straps on........Happy Holidays.....Steven J............

The rear suspension must be at design ride height in order to install the straps; that height (as shown in the Assembly Manual) is 3-7/8" measured from the top of the axle tube to the bottom of the frame, directly above the axle. Make sure the rear of the springs are above the rear crossmember, and use ratchet straps to suck the axle up toward the frame as Mike noted.
