    1957 T-10 1 Transmission Main Case

I have purchased a T-10 1 transmission main case with casting date of 3-20 and assembly date WD247 (april 24th 1957). The assembly date stamp mark is very week (not that deep and not all characters fully marked).

I can't see a shift number stamped (1 or 2 after the 7). I tried playing with contrast and brightness in the attached pic and I can't see one.

Would anyone out there know if very early T-10 1 had the shift number marked or not. If not, when (closest date you know) did the shift started being marked.

I would really appreciate pics of your assembly date stamps, if possible.

    For the record.

I played with the contrast and brightness on the previously attached photo (which is the altered version) and I can see an extremely faded "2" on the area where the shift should be stamped. So I got "WD2472" stamped on my tranny.

On the early C1 trannys with iron main cases I've looked at, the main case is cast about a month ahead of the assembly date. Generally the aluminum tail housing will be much closer to the assembly date. Side covers I'm not as sure on. It seems like the first design was pretty weak and broke the shift lever bosses so many had been replaced with later designs. The second and third designs added gussets to correct this. The dates your seeing seem in line with the ones I've seen.

Hi Al I have seen a few T 10 1 cases without the shift stamps and also some without the year, when the shift mark (1 or 2) is on the case there is a dash between it and the year character. Phil 8063

Here are a few pics of a 1957 T-10. I removed this from a red 57 with FI and heater delete.

          Enjoy,

The pics Joe attached are of a main case casted the very same day that my T-10 was.

Looking at both main cases I can see that they came from different molds as they are some minor differences in the model and date castings.

As for the Q1 (Joe's) and Q2 (mine) marks I thought there were stamped but now I think they are casting marks maybe stamped on the mold and not on the iron. Any comments? What was the meaning/use of those marks? Mold number? Casting shift?

On the assembly date stamp, could it be the case for the dash to be used only when a single digit day was stamped?

Yes, when the day of the month only has one digit, the dash was used. My records show that all early T10's were assembled on the second shift through 1960.
