    Diff Bolt Coating

What type of coating should the bolts on the differential on a 1963 have?

    James,

On my 63 coupe the bolts are blackened. Not sure it's 100% correct but I think it is. If you want to be 100% correct the complete rear assembly minus the nut for the shock bolt is black chassis paint.

If by differential you mean the rear cover to housing, the attaching bolts are grade five and black.

Jim a while back there was a posting on a 63 going through the assy. line, they showed the chassis upside down and a black out process being done that looked like everything on the undercarriage was blacked out in the rear and im sure in the front to. however im sure the guys posting have the correct finish blk. phos. was correct. there could have been some black out on them. I believe that 63 may have been the only year that style of black was done.

Ed, Think you will find ample evidence that 63/64 rear suspension was all blacked out. Michael Hanson has a lot of photos of such.

However a note of caution here - the 5th JG expects the rear suspension to be natural with a note on page 146; ". . . Some original 1963 models may have the entire rear suspension assembly, including the half shafts and differential, painted semi-gloss black." So if you have all the components bare now why not leave them that way and if changes happen in the future you can always paint it black.

Alan, I dont have a 63/64, but I read this C2 article a while back and the pic.s were worth a thousand words, found it very interesting, as I have a C3 and I had many questions on what exactly was blacked out on my car and just at what time during the assy. of the car. theres such a difference between 63 and my 72. there is just are not many pictures of exactly how every year changed with each cars process. theres so many questions still to answer.
