Does anyone have a PPG code for the 61-62 Fawn Beige or a good source where I can get a mix using any of the codes provided in the NCRS Guide?

I found that the Color Chip Formula is "920" & the Paint Code is "22005."- Top

Re: PPG Paint Code for Fawn Beige
Yes, I am worried about the color. I have been to local parts houses and they either don't have any codes or all tell me I should use a new paint that can be matched to a color chip if I have it. All say the old paints won't hold up etc. I have used the codes from the NCRS 53 - 72 Corvette Specifications guide. I'm looking for someone to mix based on one of these codes to no avail. A friend used a company for '62 Roman Red and it looks real good, but now that company says it only has PPG info.David Dawdy- Top

Re: PPG Paint Code for Fawn Beige
All of the original paint codes for Fawn Beige, DuPont 4146-L, R & M A-1397 and Ditzler DDL22005 can not be formulated since the pigments and carriers are all obsolete.
920 is the paint code and does not actually represent a specific formula.
I prefer to find the color in a "Color Map" book and then do paint panels of the recommended formula(s) and pick out the best one.- Top

Re: PPG Paint Code for Fawn Beige
Joe,
The paint name "Roman Red" is pretty useless to most paint companies and body shops and the old formulas are obsolete due to material changes.
I would recommend that you go to a good automotive paint store (DuPont, Sikkens, PPG, etc.) and most of them have a portable colorimeter with which they can measure the color, gloss. metallics and then come up with a formula. The next step is to buy a small amount of paint and do some paint test panels and see if they match your car. If they are off a small amount the formula can be adjusted.
Your paint color can also be matched using "Color Map" paint chips.

The old company name is The Motor Co.
E. Bagor, Pennsylvania (name is close at least)
877-962-3800
This is the company that says they need the PPG code. They can sell in can containers as well as aerosol. The red that I saw last week looked real good.David Dawdy- Top

Hi Guys: David I want to thank you for the info and apologize for jumping in on your thread. I also want to thank Bruce for the input he gave me. It was very coincidental that the moment I was going to post a thread about paint David did the same thing. Thanks again. Joe- Top

Re: PPG Paint Code for Fawn Beige
The PPG code for my Laguna Gray '70 was off by a mile. I had to do it the hard way, trial and error. After about seven pints were mixed with incremental changes in the formula, I finally got one that matched a known original paint car. I even had a pint of DuPont enamel mixed up, since they were the OEM supplier, just to see if the color was right. That was way off too and looked about 15 shades darker than the PPG formula for the "same" color.
I wouldn't spray a drop of any formula until you match it to an original paint car or a paint standard.- Top

Re: PPG Paint Code for Fawn Beige
I just went through this with 68 Rally Red in PPG. As stated above, you have to have a shop that can "tweek" the formula. I have seen the computer color match systems and sometimes they are good and sometimes you still have to do spray outs and adjust to get a good match, especially if you are only doing part of the car as I did.
If you are painting the whole car and you had a good sample piece of the color you wanted, then I guess the color match computer system would get you close enough.
