    Stolen Sting Ray Story

There is a great story on CorvetteBlogger.Com about the recovery of a stolen Sting Ray...39 years later! Here is the link: http://www.corvetteblogger.com/index...after-39-Years

Wow, that guy finally got lucky!

great present for the insurance company that probably paid him about $2000.00 for the lost car.

Mike, you didn't read the story correctly. The owners insurance ran out. Therefore the only person that has a claim on the vehicle was the origional owner! In the article it sounds like the ownwer involontarily "loaned" the car to some other people and over the years they restored it for him!

in that case good for him. i buy and restore corvettes as a hobby. that is my worst nightmare. buying a car and restoring it and then finding out it was stolen at some point in its life. as soon as i get one, even if its junk and has been sitting for years, i go and buy a tag for it before i do anything to it. even with that i am still afraid something like that will happen. if someone steals it from me i have insurance. you cant get insurance for what happened to the guy that restored that one.

There was a similar story about a 69 stolen Vette recovery after many years. I believe it was in the Parade magazine.

Suppose this car had been restored after it was stolen with a new motor, new wheels, new radio and new interior, all paid for by the restorer. What is the original owner entitled to "get back"?

I bet that could keep a few lawyers busy.

He'd get it back as it sits, and that's exactly what happened. Some previous owner paid to have it restored, and that owner is now out what he paid for it and what he paid to have it restored, as he never legally owned it - it was a stolen car.

Sounds to me as if there is a need for an entrepreneur to go into the car "title insurance" business. Just like title insurance on property, this would insure that you could get the value back on your car if it turned out to be stolen. So even though the risk is slight, it would seem that the cost for that type of insurance would be minimal and your worries of someone taking your car away with no compensation would be over.
