    #1931385 "D1111" Ballast Resistor

What was the first model year and engine displacement to use the #1931385 D1111 Ballast Resistor?

    Thanks for any information!

As far as Chevrolet applications go, it was first used for 1955 Corvette with 265 V-8. However, it also has Pontiac and Oldsmobile applications that might pre-date that. I don't have any information on those applications, though.

Old Delco catalog indicates 56-64 Chevrolet lines as the only applications for this part.

          Joe,

The part didn't exist under that part number before 9/29/1954.

Excellent. Thanks. It looks like whatever those Pontiac and Oldsmobile applications were they were 1955 or later.

Possible, its linked to the introduction of 12 volt ignition systems?

No, it's linked to 'hot' vs. 'cold' ignition system spark plug burn profile. Corvette was a high performance car and designers didn't seem to care about the loss of point life due to higher primary coil circuit current flow. Just make SURE the plugs fire properly during high RPM/WOT engine operation.

So, the ballast was of a low resistance to match the coil's low resistance primary winding profile. Most Chevy passenger car V8 engines used a 'cold' ignition system with higher resistance ballast and higher resistance primary coil. There are two exceptions that I know of:

                (1) Turbo charged Corvair
                (2) Solid lifter 348/409

These shared the same ignition parts (ballast/coil) with Corvette.

It was mid-way through the '63 model year that the Corvette ignition setup changed. Essentially, low HP/low rev engines (hydraulic lifter) got the 'cold' ignition system while high horse/high rev engines (solid lifter) continued using the 'hot' ignition. This was the course through '64.

I don't know if other cars/engines in the GM lineup shared these parts. But, in Chevy parlance, that's why it's so hard to find this ballast resistor on other passenger cars in the scrap yards...

Even probable. Here's what the July '65 Chevrolet P&A30 says: "55-62 Corvette (12 volt)".

The other passenger car applications shown for #1931385 [black dot, 0.3 ohms] start in '56, when I believe the 6 volt systems had already been dropped.
