    Possible, if retarded too far.

Thanks Bill. Is there a reason that the timing would change while the carb was off the car? Could it be something else that Im missing?

Distributor clamp not fully tightened. If car has A.I.R. might have a vent valve that's getting flakey (after burn through the exhaust vs. bona fide back fire)...

Also check the VAC. If it is not functioning properly you will not have the correct advance during low load/normal driving conditions. With a non-functioning VAC you may be up to 18 degrees retarded from spec.

            Chuck-
If you did not disturb the distributor when the carb was pulled, and was working properly prior-it is probably not your problem now. I have however, had a similar problem when points went south, so putting in a fresh set of point would not hurt.
What maybe more the situation is the jetting in the carb. Remember, prior to the rebuild, it was probably whorped and leaking extra fuel-you probably compensated for this by installing leaner jets and/or power valve. Now that all is back to specs, the jets you ran before are too lean. Try riching up on the main jets and be sure to check your vacuum, which is probably more than before and install a power valve to work with that vac number-get the Holley performance book for step by step how to do.
Both the points and running too lean of jets will result in the miss fire you describe. Hope this helps.

Charles, How old is the gasoline? Try to run the tank down and add some fresh gas. I doubt the problem is in the carburetor.

Yeah I really would be surprised if it was the carb. I guess I should have added that the fuel in the tank is fresh. Ill take a look at the distributor next. Thanks to everyone for the input, Ill post updates once I have tried these suggestions.
