Does the '62 Corvette use a one key system or a two key system? One key seems to work my ignition, doors, and trunk lock. Is this correct?

Re: One key or two
58- 60 uses a 2 key system and it drives me nuts. I'm in the trunk a lot getting my mother in-law in and out LOL. It was a good change of GM to keep a one key system. Stewy- Top

Don't tell me the trunk is the same as the ignition. I always thought they were separate keys. Stewy- Top

Re: One key or two
I suppose it's an easy fix. I can get the lock re keyed to my ignition ! I thought I saw a picture somewhere of the 2 keys advertised. Mine having 2 different keys has got me buggered. I haven't got my owners book handy I'm sure it has it in there. I can't find anything in the JG ? Stewy- Top

Re: One key or two
Stewy - For some reason many folks who sell keys advertise 2 keys, an octagon head key presumably for the ignition & door and a round head key for the compartment & trunk or tire lock, for the pre-1965 Corvettes but the fact of the matter is that 1953 to 1964 Corvettes came from the factory with a set of 2 octagon head keys that operated all the locks. Starting in 1965 Corvettes came with 2 sets of keys, i.e. 4 keys total, 1 set of 2 octagon head keys for the ignition & door locks, and 1 set of 2 round head keys for the glove box and spare tire locks.
In 1969, the keys changed to the rectangular head and the oval head keys, so there was 1 set of 2 rectangular head keys for the ignition & door locks and 1 set of oval head keys for the compartment and spare tire locks. In 1974 a change was made so the set of rectangular head keys only operated the ignition lock and the set of oval head keys operated the door, compartment, and spare tire locks.

Re: One key or two
Well I just got home and read the operations manual for my 1960 Corvette. It states that I'm an idiot and a single key operates all locks on the Corvette : Ignition switch, package compartment, doors and luggage compartment lid. So I am wrong once again so I will be getting my compartment lock re- keyed ! I better let out the Mother In-law before I change the trunk lock.

Re: One key or two
Stewart, I'm with you. On my 59, I've always had two keys, both with different heads and was told the roundish one was the ignition and the triangle one was door and trunk. Never realized that they were the same. Never tried the keys in any other combination.- Top

Re: One key or two
One of my customers is a locksmith so it's an easy fix !
I have read the manual a few times over the last year incase I missed something. I might of missed it because the manual lists the trunk as a compartment ! I always refer the compartment as the storage between the two seats ! Stewy- Top
