can somebody identify this steering box?

I attach some pictures of a steering box that I took from my May 68 car. I doubt it is original to the car but what is it; correct service replacement, some GM box or ....? Looking forward to your views and input, Erik

    Eric,

Steering gear boxes didn't have the aluminum cover until the start of the 69 year, so you may have a replacement steering gear box.

The good thing it's made by saginaw and it will work.

      Erik.

The box is a 69-up. And the cover bolts are of the mid 70's to early 80's headmarking. The tag looks like a julian calander built the 199th day of 76-86???. I don't know if or when they started putting these tags on or if it is indeed a over the counter box.

Looks like a 76 box, they start with the date tags in the mid 70's. The input spline will have a Coarse thread and flat at 12O'Clock. The original 68 box would have a cast iron cover, cover bolts with lock washers, single lip lower seal, full spline- fine. The ratios are the same for the entire run,the pitman arms are different between PS & manual but the boxes are the same.

The casting clock on the aluminum cover looks to be dated February or March, 1981. So, assuming that the cover is original to the assembly (which is likely), the assembly could not have been manufactured prior to that time.
