John, in the CPC days I had one of those guys as a boss - you are exactly correct, I never saw him

So using FB as the surrogate, what was the spec on their mid 60's vent window regulators? 1/4 before window movement? More or less?

      Ron -

I have no idea - I don't have the Fisher Body Audit specs.

Isn't the excessive play often from over excersion on the window crank resulting in the cover of the regulator being forced away from the regulator rather than from wear? The covers are held on by peening over the soft material that the reg body is made of. I have seen where this peened over material gives way resulting in the cover becoming loose.

Russ you nailed it. Also the aluminum gear teeth get chewed up by the steel worm. A way to fix it is to fill the missing teeth area with Devcon aluminum filler. Hand file and sand to shape and then modify the mounting steel plate to close up the gear mesh (gear center to center spacing). Oblong the mounting holes and tap #10-24 the aluminum housing where the peen was. Then add a bit of the Devcon to the boss area where the peen was and file to fit to retain the steel plate in the new closer position. This will mesh the gears tighter together so there is no backlash thus "fast acting" crank.

But be advised hard turning the crank to close or open a poorly fitting vent window will in short order cause the same issues all over again.
