    67 AC Compressor ID/Questions/Pics

    Hey All,

I recently bought an AC compressor that was listed as a 1967 compressor dated February 67. I started checking out all of the numbers on the unit and had a couple of questions. The head plate (see pic) is stamped:

    B67 (February 6, 1967)
R 4 (not sure about this)
    6555302 (head plate part number)

    Sticker had:

5910645 for model number which seems correct for 1967

although the serial number was worn off, I could make out the numbers that had been original stamped into the foil label - 021571 which translates into February 15, 1967; 1st shift

also on the front at the base of the pulley near the electrical input another number was stamped 50/655283 (this a part number but not sure to what yet).

    So, questions

The, what appears to be original label, seems to marked correctly for a real 1967 AC compressor. All the wear and rust marks suggest the label is original.

The head plate seems to be marked B67 for Feb 6, 1967 which puts it ahead of the foil label and correct by NCRS judging book.

But, the head plate part number 6555302 can be found in the Corvette Parts Catalogue on page 9-3 under 9.174 and is listed as a 1978 Y (Axial) (Non Super Heat Type) (1st Des). So, I'm confused.

Lots of previous posts by other C2 owners have listed this same head plate number 6555302 as being on their compressors as well. What is going on here?

    Re: 67 AC Compressor ID/Questions/Pics

OK, figured this much out the number on the front is actually 6555283, which is the FRONT head of the compressor and is listed in the corvette parts catalogue as 63-78 Y (axial) HEAD, FRT. So, the front head seems to match a 67 compressor perfectly even by part number.

It is just odd that the HEAD, RR, which is listed as 6555302 only shows 78 as the year.

Are there any people out there with original AC units in their cars? If so, does your compressor have the 6555302 rear plate HEAD? Thanks.

      Hi Kirk,

Until recently, I had been under the impression that my Dad added "factory" A/C to his '67 back in 1977, but about a week ago I learned from the tank sticker that the A/C was an original option, not a later addition.

The A6 Compressor is stamped 6555302 just like yours, and dated K 29 6 (November 29, 1966, the car's VIN and Trim Tag correspond to January 11th, 1967 assembly date).

      Foil Decal on Compressor: 5910645

Much of the coloring and print on the compressor decal is missing, but the indentations appear to be: 12 23 62 (Dec. 23, 1966 - 2nd shift)

Great. After looking at the parts catalog again, I noticed that the first 4 numbers were all for the front plate and there was only one number for the rear plate. Not sure why the catalog shows the rear plate as only 1978, but it really doesn't make sense because clearly there had to be a rear plate available for all those other years. It is also good to see that your decal date and rear end plate date are within a month of each other too. That suggests that mine isn't so far off either. Thanks.

I checked mine near the front (by the pulley, at the electrical connection) and I don't see a ' 6555283 ' number (or any other number). I checked your pictures again, is it in your pictures and I just missed it, or where exactly is it located? If I can find it on mine, I'll verify whether it's the same as yours or not.

            Scott,

It is not pictured. At the pulley end where the pulley mechanism meets the housing there are two recessed areas that are flush with the housing on that end. I found the numbers in the recess under the plug mount. They are a bit hard to see. Hope that helps.

Checked two of my P&A catalogs, Gr 9.174. The '67 1st ed. (Oct '66) shows 62-67 ALL, CORVETTE...front....6555283. For the rear, shows 6555302.[there were no rotary compressors then --- all were axial]. Same thing in my Rev Jan 1st 1970 Corvette Catalog P&A30B, except '62-'70 years applicable.

Other than the 6555283, look for the casting DATE of the front head, at the bottom indentation. Should be somewhat close in date to the rear '302'.

Can't check the compressor now as I have it all packed up and ready to ship. I remember there being a "smudge" there but didn't think it looked like any numbers. Maybe I just need to clean it up. I will definitely check it when I get the unit back.

My parts catalog is a December 1983 and it lists it this way

                  9.174 HEAD, A.C. Compressor

                  63-78 Y (AXIAL) 6555283 1 34.35 HEAD, FRT.

                  78 Y (AXIAL) 6555302 1 30.75 HEAD, RR. (NOTE 2)

I was just confused by the rear head only listing the part as 1978?

                    Re: 67 AC Compressor ID/Questions/Pics

This is my first post/question, but the sticker on the AC Compressor has a code of 032962 and the code on the back of the compressor is 0236. Could this be the original compressor for this car? I am just getting started on it and was checking the numbers. Everything else seems to check out.
                    Thanks

Sounds to me like you've got an original [at least for a 1966 car ]. Assuming that the model number is 6550133, and the back head is cast "C"236 (not zero); ie March 23'rd 1966. The date format decodes as: March (03) 29th "6" = 1966; 2= second shift.

                        Maybe these pics will help.

I have more but can't post twice for some reason.
