It does not go on all that thick, so it should not cover up the texture.

I purchased an aerosol can of clear Chip Guard and noticed that the ideal temperature is 70 degrees. For me in north Texas, the next time 70 degrees happens will be sometime in mid-September! One of my C1 colleagues suggested using a ring made out of small diameter garden hose to practice applying the Chip Guard.

Valeria, click on reply to thread, once that window opens look for GO Advanced in the bottom RH corner. Scroll down until you see manage attachments. In the top right you will see the box add files, click on it. Go to the location of your photo(s) and open each one of them as instructed. Once your are finished adding photos, click on done in the bottom RH corner of that box. Post your reply as you normally would.

          Re: C1 Steering Wheel

I sprayed Chip Guard on a smooth plastic ice scraper handle and I would describe the texture as micro pebble; just small dots of texture, not the wiggly, wavy texture of the seville grain. The air temp was around 93 degrees and that is much higher than the recommended ideal temp of 70 degrees. i did not spray primer on the plastic handle first. I would think that the air temp would only affect the drying time as the Chip Guard hits the wheel, not the texture pattern produced from 3 to 5 feet from the object. I purchased the clear Chip Guard and the red color of the ice scraper handle came through with no problem. if the texture had been acceptable, a couple of clear coats and the wheel would have been finished. Not pleased with the first attempt; will wait until air temp is closer to 70 degrees F before I try again.

I finished restoring two red C1 steering wheels. I wasn't able to replicate the original leather grain, but I didn't expect to. My original wheel had large open cracks on all spokes. I went through the process outlined above and am pleased with the results. If the finish will last for a few years, I will be totally satisfied. The first photo shows a filled crack with Chip Guard applied. The remaining photos show the finished product. The grain on the spokes was more leather-like than the remainder of the wheel. The remainder of the wheel was more like large pebble grain.

The last two photos show the difference in texture on two different spokes.

I expect to receive a small deduct at the Lone Star Regional in 2 weeks since the texture I created is not like the original texture, but I think it looks better than my slick, shiny wheel.
