Can the stationary antenna mast be removed by holding the large nut with a wrench and unsrew the smaller nut, (for lack of a better term), that is just above it? Or does the large nut have to be taken off and the whole assembly removed? This is for a '75. Thanks for any responses.

Re: Car Cover-Antenna Hole
Brian,
I have a '65, but as designed, the power antenna stays partially exposed when in the down position. I placed the cover on the car for a week or two to confirm the natural location of where the antenna should penetrate the cover. Then, I cut a small hole in the cover so the antenna mast could pass through. I went to a hardware store and purchased "Toilet Seat Hinge Bolt Washers" (package of 8 cost about $ 2.00) and some "Crazy Glue" and glued one washer to the back side of the cover (where it touches the antenna base) and one washer to the top side of the cover (for added strength and water protection). The antenna mast passes through the washers nice and snug. My car stays in a carport and doesn't get wet, but if yours does, you can find a smaller rubber washer or grommet to "squeeze" down the antenna shaft and seat it against the top washer. I keep one in my glove box in case I go somewhere and get stuck in the rain. I use a small black rubber washer that I had in my toolbox that came from a toilet flusher repair kit. I know - it's sounds like sacrilege using toilet parts around our beloved Vettes, but they work!
Good luck,

It isn't hard so don't worry. Good Luck!

I use this cover & it comes with a nicely-reinforced antenna hole:

Re: Car Cover-Antenna Hole
Thanks for the replies. I tried unscrewing it at the small nut but it wouldn't budge. Maybe I need a little penetrant and more force. I just guessed at hole placement with the $30 Walmart special I bought ten years ago.......don't want to do the same with a $150 cover.- Top

Re: Car Cover-Antenna Hole
If salt has entered the slip fit that is about 1" deep when you get the nut off it could be like welded together with the base and never come out.I have had to break away the base to save the original mast. I think in your case a hole in the cover is the easy way out.Lyle

Re: Car Cover-Antenna Hole
For non-highway trips I leave the antenna mast off of my 68 and 70. I installed a rubber tip into the antenna mast hole that supports the car covers to reduce any abrasion.
Radio works just fine in town without the mast.- Top
