    Telescopic Steering Column "Slack" 1967

Hopefully someone here can point me in the proper direction. I have a couple of 67 telescopic steering columns that have play (side to side, not in/out) in the upper column, in the area of the turn signal switch. This must be a common problem, as I have seen this on quite a few cars. I am inclined to believe it is an adjustment, instillation issue.

I looked through the archives and found a similar thread but still, I am a little fuzzy on exactly what and where to check. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Such 'can' be an adjustment issue and sometimes it's a matter of internal part abuse/wear. Both are generally the result of prior owners using the steering wheel to HOIST their bodies up/out of the car.

The adjustment issue can result from screws attaching upper to lower column sections together loosening and backing out. That's a pretty simple fix with a little Loc-Tite and good re-torque.

The wear out aspect is typically seen in later era tilt-tele columns resulting from steel tilt pivot pins enlongating the holes in their pot metal anchor points resulting in the need for a fresh/new upper shaft housing. But, you can also have worn shaft bearings in the mix too.

Bottom line, until the column is fully disassembled and rebuilt, all you have are educated guesses...

You may find these papers of value when tearing down your column:
