    Correct AC 1964 327

I had my AC rebuilt and will be having it installed next week. The problem I have is: 1, Should I use the original screw down clamps or the newer crimped hose fittings. 2, What is best for the refrigerant to use, the R 12 or the 134a. Does it make a difference what clamp is used with a particular refrigerant. As always. Thanks to those who took the time to help me with my question.

    Allan:

There is a lot of good info in the archives regarding this subject. It has been asked a number of times before. Check under "air conditioning" or similar words.

To specifically answer your question, I would use R12 and mineral oil lubricant , and also go back with original type hoses and clamps. Especially if you ever plan or think about having your car judged. The old arrangement still works quite well.

Rich Pasqualone posted awhile back about knowing someone who can supply and stencil the correct AC hoses. Something to consider if originality is an issue.

You may leak a little less refrigerant if you buy the barrier hoses with the crimped fittings, but the difference will not be significant in a well maintained R12 system.

If you really want to go 134a, be advised that you should then use the crimped barrier hoses, you will also need to use a 134a compatible refrigerant oil like ester or PAG, your charging fittings must be changed to 134a type, and you must install a sticker that indicates that 134a refrigerant is installed.

The costs for R12 are trending down (about $20/pound x 3-4 pounds required) and you can go on-line to get the air conditioning certification necessary to legally buy and handle R12 (and R22). Just "google" the phrase "EPA TEST" or "EPA REFRIGERATION TEST" to get a list of sites that offer on-line certification. Let me know if you need additional info or have problems finding.

Also, what oil (if any) was used/installed when your AC compressor was rebuilt?? You need to know this.

The Chevrolet Service Manual has an excellent section on HVAC and air conditioning and its maintenance.

Hope this helps. Again, check the archives. You can also check under my name, since I have been involved in many of the discussions.

      Larry,

Thanks for your help. I imagine it should not make to much of a difference in the local great and meet events. I think her days are over for now for the NCRS judged events. I can put the clamps in a box and offer them up to the next owner if I decide to sell.

      Thank you again,
      Allan
