    1968 nose support questions

    A few months back a post came up about 1968 and if they should have a nose support rod.

    I didn't pay much attention to it at the time as I was traveling and was sure I had the rod on my April built car. Tonight I was cleaning the car and noticed I don't have the rod. I was getting confused with my 69.

    My 68 does have a front support brace, but it is not a rod but rather an L-bracket that is tied to the large center bumper support (see attached pictures). No one in the earlier post mentioned this bracket. The 68 AIM shows the rod with no changes made to the drawing during the model year.

    I have couple questions for 68 owners. Does any one else with a 68 have the nose support bracket I show in the pictures? Does any 68 owner have a car with the support rod shown in the AIM that they think is original to the car? If so please give built date.

    You gotta love 68, no two built a like.

      I am 99% certain that my May 68 car does NOT have this L-shaped bracket

          The bracket is an "early" component on 68's. My February-built car has the bracket.

              My November 67 built 68 has the "L" bracket.

                      John, my original Jan 22 built 68 has the same bracket as yours.

                          I think you will find the bolted on "L" bracket and the big "U" collar brace with the smaller "L" bracket welded to it go hand and hand. Later c3's don't have it, they just mount with the two bolts into the bumper.

                          I wonder if any were ever produced with the "L" bracket welded to the big collar and no bolted on "L" bracket.

                              My September 1967 does NOT have the bracket. When I mounted the rod I fabricated the bracket. This does not help in judging, but I prefered to have the support for the nose.

                                      It is extremely interesting that your car did not have this bracket. Can you describe exactly what was there? Perhaps there was an "early early" arrangement on 68's.

                                          To clarify my previous comment, my 68 produced in September 1967 had no support rod, and no accomodation for one. When I restored I felt there was not enough support for the nose. After checking out later years, I fabricated parts in order to add the rod.

                                              My Oct 67 build date is the same as yours. My radiator support is not drilled for the rod.

                                                  My April built '68 has the rod with accompanying mounting hole in the radiator support. Looks stock, but the poor girl had a hard life before she got to me.

                                                          Thanks for your info. I have a friend with an original mid May 68 and he has the rod. I don't know if your car is built in early mid or late build of April.

                                                          April seems to be one of the design changes made to the infamous 68 concerning the front nose rod.
