Re: 58 230HP Oil Pan
I don't think there is such a thing. I have been through it before and have bought one but not 100 % sure if it's still the real deal. Loren Lundberg did an article on them. I have a copy of it but can't get it out of my Apple Mac. If you email Loren I'm sure he would be happy get you a copy. I started a thread a while back maybe 8 months ago you might be able to find it. There was a couple of real ones in that. I will see if I can get you the link. Stewy- Top

Re: 58 230HP Oil Pan
Stewy,
Thanks for your response. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
I am slowly restoring a 58 which I have owned since 1968. I have a good deal of the original parts. Unfortunately I have stored a 57 passenger motor with the corvette motor. I also had a 63 327 in it for some years. I have two pans, one with four grooves I think is the 57. The other however has the drain plug on the side or corner. I just don't know if it could be the 58 or maybe the 63. It is definately a small block pan.
What do you think?
I will try Loren also.
Thanks,
Ben Heinrich- Top

While there were some mostly minor variations in C1 oil pan external configuration, all C1 pans were "3 step" and all had the oil drain on the bottom of the sump.
1963-74 Corvette oil pans were of "2 step" configuration and all had the oil drain on the lower rear of the pan, about at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical surfaces.
The only Corvette pans that ever used a side drain configuration were the 75-79 pans. These pans were basically the same as those used on many other Chevrolet cars. Many Chevrolet passenger cars used a side drain configuration pan.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 58 230HP Oil Pan
I have Lorens article but just tried again for you to get it out and it's not happening. Yes they are a 3 step design and drain from around the bottom middle. I think you should try top send Loren an E- mailI'm shore he would be happy to help out. There are lots of these things and also service replacements for them as well. Your model won't have a trap door in it only the Higher HP ones have them. Stewy- Top

Re: 58 230HP Oil Pan
Edward are you sure that 5754 230 hp 1958's all had the same ribs. I can't find any documentation on it anywhere ? I'm not saying that you are incorrect just would like to know where you read it from. Stewy- Top

Re: 58 230HP Oil Pan
Thanks to all that responded! After some searching I found the article by Loren and found the picture on page 12, photo D with one long groove and two little ones on the side. One of my two pans is exactly the same. Obviously the correct pan for my car. It is a 58 230HP built in April 58. There is no trap door and it has the baffle in the bottom as shown in Lorens article. Looks like I saved myself $795.- Top

A picture and description of the pan that I described in an earlier post is included in the current 1956-1957 Judging Manual. You may want to refer to that document.
This pan was used on all 1958 to 1960 230hp engines as well as all hydraulic lifter engines for 61-62. "Trap door" pans were used on solid lifter versions in 1960-1962. The original trap door pan was nearly identical to the other pan with one major difference- it had only one long rib on the side of the pan. Trap door pans with multiple ribs are later service replacements.
Personally, I have never seen any other version on a known original car built during the 1957-1962 era. I would like to hear from anyone that has.- Top
