The Delco 74 series battery that I purchased back in Sept. 2004 will no longer hold a charge. Based on some of the posts I've seen about the length of service and cost on "original repo batteries", I'm not feeling too bad for getting 5+ years service out of mine, along with a few extra judging points...all for just $75. Now that my primary objective is with "starting and driving", I'm interested in hearing any recommendations as to the "best" replacement battery available in today's market for my '74, LS4. By "best", I'm primarily looking at two things, maximum cold cranking amps and long lasting internal design, all of which needs to fit within the original battery compartment. My local Chevy dealer indicated that the 74 series I purchased 5 years ago is no longer available, but that a series 78 would be a suitable replacement. Any thoughts...

A series 78 is what you need. From Delco, these are available in both side terminal-only and dual terminal configurations. You need, of course, a side terminal. However, the extra set of post terminals makes for a VERY convenient place to attach charger or jumper cables. But, it also provides another place for battery leaks.
In a conventional battery I would use one of the following:
----Delco 78-7YR
----Interstate Megatron
----Sears DieHard Platinum. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C-3 Battery (modern) Replacement
Look at the A/C Delco "Professional Series" 78-7yr 770CCA or 78-6yr "Professional Series" 700CCA, the 78-7yr battery has a 50 month free replacement warranty the best in the business.- Top
