Guys, I am nearly ready to start reassembly of the chassis on my '56. I have run into a snag with the leaf springs. They are painted and reassembled with new liners. I only lack putting the bands on which I also have. The problem is the tool to crimp the bands. Corvette Central recommends the Signode SRC-5823(sealing tool) to do this. They used to rent this tool but folks did not return them so they no longer offer this. I have tried locally to find one of these tools but the shippers I talked to use sealers that crimp in 4 places rather than 2. Sources I have tried want $260 and up for this tool. I have not seen any spring bands that were restored with this Signode tool. I would love to see pictures if possible to see if it is really worth what they are asking. I have read past posts on this subject which have left me scratching my head. From what I have seen, Corvette Central offers the most correct bands and retainers. I would like the crimp to look like factory. I have attached pictures of an original band from one of my springs to show what they looked like. I have tried to show the clip and crimp. One picture shows the band and where I cut it which was on top. I appreciate whatever help you can give. Thanks in advance! Brooks Glover (2141)

Brooks
Have you check posts on this in the last few weeks? Seems to me there was a rather good discussion on this subject just a few weeks ago with a couple of different solutions, might want to check the archives again.

Re: Banding Leaf Springs on C-1's
Terry, thanks for your response. I did look at the archieves again and read many of the past posts on this subject. Because of the special tool required and using it properly, this task seems to be a daunting one. There are a number of tools out there to crimp clips on metal banding. Of course there is the issue of the proper crimp. Some tools crimp in four places while others are two. There is also the issue of raised crimps or reverse crimps. From what I have read and been told by Corvette Central, the Signode SRC-5823 is the tool to use. I have also heard that it must be modified to make the crimp look correct for C-1 Corvettes. I would like to see pictures of crimps done with this tool to see how they compare with what was originally done by the factory. For me this is the hold up on putting the rear suspension under my '56. I hope there is someone out there who can help. Thanks in advance! Brooks Glover (2141)- Top
