    Castings Pre-1962

I am in need of pictures of block stamp pads, casting dates, clocks and numbers from the Tonawanda NY and St Catherines (Canada) plants.

    Thanks for any help!

I have a very early 265 block (dated 54) under my bench. It is a T. If you are interested in those No's. I'll pull it out and photo them. Bob

      Thanks! Bob

I would appreciate it, I am trying to display the information from a Tonawanda block (casting) and a Flint block (casting). Is there an absence of the pipe plug, I believe the plug was used in the Flint block casting process, on the front of the block and is there any information on the stamp pad?

      Thanks for the help!

Ray, no casting clocks used and shorter stamp pad in earlier blocks. I believe there was a "restorer" article on this topic.

Thanks to all! Jerry, great pictures, just what I needed. Could you please confirm the casting date on the Tonawanda block? It is hard to see in the picture, it looks to be K 3 62.

            Thanks again Ray

              Ray,
If the small square plug is the one you refer to, yes it is on Flint blocks.

                    Hi! Bob

                    Great Pictures!

What indicators are you using to determine that your block is a Tonawanda block? I tried to enlarge and rotate the picture to read the stamp pad, but I still could not read it. It is my understanding that a Flint block will have a single number for the year, "Dated I 25 4" (1954) Flint-4 Tonawanda-54 and that the Flint block had a pipe threaded plug in the front of the block for the casting process as in one of your photos and the Tonawanda block did not have this plug. Could you please provide a photo of the stamp pad and the casting date?

Thanks for the photos and your help!

I believe I have one or two Flint blocks without the pipe plugs. I believe they are early 56 blocks.

Here is a few more Pic's. I could only put 4 on the earlier posting. On the engine pad it says T55F. It's the earliest 55 block I've ever seen.

                          Re: Castings Pre-1962

Bob, '55 thin wall 265 blocks didn't have an integrated oil filter, which was implemented in '56 with the block redesign. Black oil filters were installed at Tonawanda and Flint and used the 1/8 inch oil pipe plug in the front of the block. 56 Flint and up blocks left the pipe plug there. 56 and up Tonawanda blocks deleted the 1/8 inch pipe plug. If a 55 oil filter was dealer installed the dealer taped the oil galley and installed a blue oil filter. Also, not all '55 Tonawanda blocks had the "T" by the block casting number. Have very little knowledge about the Tonawanda blocks and this info came from one of my Tri-Five friends. Would be helpful to have a closer photo of the cast date. Thanks for the photo you've posted. Gary....
