    '65 Starter/Solenoid

    Background info: 1965 L76 with A/C built 2/18/65;
    To recover originality point deductions, I need to replace my "service replacement" starter/solenoid with a rebuilt, correct, date-coded unit. I have found one that the dealer tells me is correct but being a bit gun-shy over "correct" Sting Ray parts, I thought it best to let you experts state your opinions before I buy.

    I have attached their photo of the starter/solenoid. I realize that no one can see, in this photo, the "Delco-Remy", "1107320", or "4M12" on the starter motor housing. It is also impossible to see the type of screw heads. Do you see any issues with this one? -Clark

    Clark:

    I would just call John Pirkle and order the correct one from him. That way you know it will be right.

    It might take a few months to get from John, but if you have a upcoming deadline, tell him, and he might be able to expedite.

      I believe the screws in the stater housing holding the field windings should be slot-head vs. Philips with the change taking place later in time (circa the 70's).

      Although original solenoids WERE stamped with the Delco Remy PN, this aspect is generally hard to verify on the judging field due to visibility. So, most judges simply inspect the Bakelite cover on the solenoid to insure it has the correct/original Delco Remy identifying emboss in the middle of the outside end and it's of correct color/material vs. current era service replacement covers...

        Larry, I called Mr. Pirkle a few weeks ago. He was out of stock and could not tell me when he would have more. Plus, I am still awaiting a Delco horn relay I ordered from him at that time. -Clark

          Try your local rebuild shops for a core and have them rebuild it for you. That is a very common starter used on almost every Corvette, Nova, Chevelle and Impala in 1965. I've even seen completely rebuilt ones on E-Bay for $69.99.
