    54 Steering Fluid

I'm having trouble with a leak in my steering box. I cleaned it out good, adjusted it, new gasket and filled with STP - trying to get it to stop leaking. Its leaking out the side. The gasket appears to not be sealing. What do you recommend for the fluid? Any tips for sealing?

    Thanks Greg

    Greg -

Use chassis grease (same stuff you use in all the grease fittings); that was the GM field cure for C1 steering gear leaks back in the day.

As John says, use chassis grease. If you want to use the correct, currently available, GM-specified grease, use GM #12377985. It's the "direct descendant" of the lubricant GM once recommended.

When I rebuild the steering I check the side plate to make sure there are no burrs or other that would prevent it from sealing. I have found alot of side plates that were not dreesed properly befor installation............Steven J......
