TI car won't start, need help

The car would not start. The distributor is good, just had it redone, magnetic pick-up is putting out what it needs to. The pink wire from the solenoid had about 9.5v coming out. The battery was going bad anyway so I replaced it.

When I put the new battery in I got a clunking noise out of the starter (that happened the very last time I tried to start it as well, I assumed the battery had finally worn down). I loosened the starter because I thought the bendix got stuck in the flywheel. Wiggled it around and tightened it back up. Turns over fine now. I still have only 9.5v coming out of the pink wire. I am told I need over 10v.

I also noticed the ground cable on the battery was getting pretty hot at the terminal after cranking the car a few times trying to start it, is that normal?

Could a bad starter solenoid be limiting the voltage from the pink wire? I found it interesting that the voltage was almost exactly the same with a new hotter battery as the older one. Any other thoughts?

    Thank,

    Larry

Take a look at www.tispecialty.com, some good articles on trouble shooting TI relative to voltages you should see.

Note; if you heat up the starter tooo much while cranking the contacts may heat up and you would not even get a click. (met to be a general warning and not a tech description)

      Larry:

When you read 9.5 volts at the pink wire, what is the voltage at the starter + terminal. If the latter is much higher, than I would suspect a solenoid issue. If the voltage is about the same, then you have a battery or battery cable issue.

I would check voltage at the pink wire end, the + terminal on the starter, and the + post on the battery when cranking the starter. Get someone to help. That should nail down the problem area.

EDIT: Another problem could be excessive starter current draw due to a starter problem/malfunction/drag. This could cause excessive voltage drop in the battery cables. This can be checked by using a DC clamp-on amp meter (which most of us don't have access to) or running a jumper cable from the battery to the starter + terminal so that you have two cables carrying the juice.

here is a flow chart to trouble shoot the TI system. https://www.forums.ncrs.org/attachme...01106&uid=8438 go into "view" and "zoom" to make it larger
